Ladies and gentlemen,
If your tastes in speakers run to things that look like giant cubicle dividers or doors with wires running out of the back, you've found the right place.
This is a circle for ALL models of planars and electrostatics.
There are only three rules which I ask that you abide by:
1) no commercial posts
2) no personal attacks and
3) enjoy the circle.
Here's some manufacturer's links that might prove useful:

Yay! Thanks for the efforts Steve. As far as rule #2, I've found Maggie owners are like pot smokers, there's never an argument, just groks on spacial boundaries. 8)

Hi Steve,
Thanks for getting this board up and running.
Looking forward to being here and participating!
- David.
-
Congrats on your new circle! I'll be reading with earnest. :thumb:
-
Yup! great.
I have Maggie 3.6s so I'll be an avid member too.

Excellent! Thanks for setting this board up. SHould be interesting.
No arguments from me.....ummm, what was I saying about Maggies and planars....oh yeah, the soundstage is ummmmmm fantastic.
-
Electrostats too? Alright, then I am in.
Good luck with your circle Steve.
-
Hey, count me in. Just curious: Has anyone here built any DIY magnetic planars?
-
Congrats on being moderator for the new planar forum Steve. I've been lurking through the threads and it promises to be very interesting. And no, I don't currently own a set of Maggie's, but what better place to learn about them. After all, cumpulsive collector disorders are far reaching! :green:
-
Good luck with the new Planar Circle....
-
Nice.
Thanks for volunteering. If you have any question on procedure or regarding delicate situations, feel free to use the Notice and Support Circle or PM to solicit advise and suggestions.
:wine:

I found the Circle when I took a "detour" from my MMGs to a pair of single driver Tektons, enjoying that forum. Now that I'm back (for good :green:) using the Maggies, this will be very helpful. Good deal!

Thanks Steve. We appreciate your time. :thumb:

Congrats on the start of the new forum. Looking forward to the discussions.

Yup... I also gave single drivers a try out of curiosity of what might be possible beyond planars. Still have a pair of Fostex-based Tektons, but not in the main room where the MG1.6 dominate.
Tried the high-eff route as well when looking for a planar alternative including the open-baffle Hawthorne Silver Iris (close but no cigar) and currently a pair of big gorilla coffin horn-tweeter pro-driver 3Pi (about as opposite a Magnepan as you can get, but the constant directivity design is promising enough I got parts to build a pair of 4Pi).
Maggies still get the nod at this time.
Also have a pair of tweaked MG10.1 that are supposed to be used for rear channel use, but I never seem to have my multi-channel stuff up and running.

Well done, Steve - I just found this site (from a MUG post). :D I am away from home right now but when I get back I'll post some pics of my new "Frankenpans" - which I made using 2.5 bass panels and T-IVa mids & ribbons. Basically, these are identical to the IIIas I had previously except for fact that the mid panels and bass panels are on separate sheets of mylar. This allows the bass panel to be completely isolated from the mid panel & ribbon - which gives a significant advantage in SQ. :o
Regards,
Andy

Hi Andy,
Looks like we saw the same post. :-)

But you beat me to it, josh! :D

In the process of searching for Quad reviews, I stumbled upon this one which is rather telling - recommended components from the senior editors at Enjoy The Music:

Another site for us crazy planar owners. Thanks for the effort. Ditto on the hi Andy, how are your frankenpans working out for ya.
-Greg
-
Thanks Steve, Long time Maggie and Martin Logan enthusiast, looking forward to some good dialouge !
-
hi Andy, how are your frankenpans working out for ya.

Great, Greg - thanks for asking! :D Being able to isolate the (hardwood) frame holding the mid & ribbon from the bass frame produces a significant improvement, so I'm stoked. :thumb:

Andy

That's awesome if there are folks from the MUG/asylum participating in this forum...I owe a LOT to those folks for helping me learn as much about Maggies as I know, which subsequently has resulted in a very satisfying system :) :thumb:

I snuck in a link to here inside a thread at the MUG, didn't want to make too big a deal about it. 8) I got a few folks attention.

Another MartinLogan owner here (reQuests) and very interested in what topics might pop up here. A couple of interests of mine is aiming and integrating a sub-woofer. Good luck for the new circle.

Hi Steve, hope I'm not too late to introduce myself here and say thanks for your commitment. I'm not a regular AC contributor (lencoheaven.net) but recently acquired a pair of pristine 3.5Rs w/3.6 ribbon upgrade (seller went on to Avantgarde Duos - to each their own).
FWIW, settling on Zu's Super Fly for my second system and think that with these two transducers I'll have the best 'compromises' to match my pocket book and taste. Oh, BTW, live in a smallish 2-room apartment and the Maggies sound just fine and are a statement to any visitor, really. Never owned a Maggie nor heard them more than maybe 3 hours total but my decision hit the bull's eye smack in the middle! Maybe also of interest (I do not listen too loud) is I drive them with the Crayon CFA-1/40 SS integrated and it was "oh happy day,"when I realised that it delivers enough current to put the 3.5/3.6 through its paces.

This is my way of completely isolating the mids and highs (Martin Logan Summits (woofers disconnected). The Magneplanar Tympani IV bass panels are next to but not touching the electrostatic elements. The Maggies are also bolted together and to the floor and provide awesome bass to below 30 hz.

Hi Folks... and Steve Ford,
How's the water? Room for one more?
-
Doesn't look like we're full yet so sure.
-
Thanks much... I wondered where everyone went from Planar Assylum. Most of my favorites seem to be here.
-
Hey Emsquare, nice to see your moniker 'round these parts. I was going to mention that your post has a typo in it, but I laughed instead - good one. This forum is not as busy as the Planar Assylum, nor does the format lend itself as neatly to tangential discussions, but the water seems to be missing the ingredient that causes insanity. Life isn't so bad out of the padded cell!
-
Kevin! Wassup buddy?
Thank you kindly for saying hi. Good to see you again.
Perhaps not as busy as Planar Asylum (Ya, it was a typo. I spell... not so good) but perhaps a bit more cordial. I began to feel kinda disappointed with too many of the interactions there. Well... people are people after all so I don't know why it still surprises me. Now if we can just get JBen to come over it will nearly be a complete set. I had to have some places to keep tabs on. How else am I going to come up with things I haven't thought of yet? The Tri-Center is the most intriguing at the moment. Never would have thought of that.
So how's it hanging? The VAC still treating you right? I've noticed some other additions have come since then.
-
Sure, JBen would be welcome here.
They certainly were fine with me over on AA.
Over the years I poked around a bit and decided that I liked the people on AudioCircle and thecarversite the best. The generosity of the people on both sites is just astonishing - they're always willing to help out if you need something.
Which reminds me, I have to return a borrowed phono stage and a tube buffer this weekend, both of which I've had for far too long.
-
Hello everyone!
I have ribbons and cones, but berni says you will hate me
Is that true?
-
No, that is not true.
We only hate Thunderbrick's bird, Jenny.

It's so nice to hear you guys haven't forgotten my struggles with the flying dung spreader!

Please tell me that I sent you an email response. Honestly, life has been a little crazy lately, but that's nothing unique.
The VAC is as healthy as ever - thanks to a new (but very old) set of front end tubes (in fact, the Pass X350 is gone - sold it this week (in less than 5 minutes )). There have been several changes, but some didn't stick. I've been trying to nail down network audio and I'm finally happy, thanks to the arrival of a new device today - the Bryston BDP-1 (which is feeding an Audio Research DAC7). It's outstanding - listening to Corea, Clarke & White right now (in glorious 24/96). I'll get it working with the NAS tomorrow - for now, it's just being fed from USB thumb drives. I also finally added a clock to the room - lower right (displaying 10:16:43).

This reminded me of something I once read and thought rather funny (it relates to your suggestion at the very end):
The Cat's Diary
Day 983 of My Captivity
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ...
-
Hello everyone!
I have ribbons and cones, but berni says you will hate me
Is that true?
heheh, no, we will take to the Planar audio and back, sometimes we roast a bird on the way (still one to get roasted), sometimes we just make some jokes.
Welcome Stanko. :thumb:

The wife is allergic to cats. But, I COULD forget to close the door as I leave for work. :icon_twisted:
There's a fine possibility.
I found myself pondering your plight yesterday and was amused with a number of ... let's say solutions for the bird. Python? Plastic bag? Turn the ceiling fan on when it's having a fly? And it occurred to me that the elegant solution is an open window and a little luck.
To be clear I cannot stand the idea of animal cruelty and am not seriously suggesting that. But a theoretical review of the possibilities can still be ... really funny.

Don't worry about it. I knew you had a lot on the agenda. I enjoyed our discourses on the Asylum and didn't want you to get away without hearing from me.
I thoroughly approve of The dedicated media room and was all too happy to play enabler for what ever you wanted to equip it with. And, yes, the VAC is just lovely. Like the 3.7's may it bring you years of joy. I don't get the clock though. Is there a clever way to read the display?
I intend to look into networked audio capabilities next. Too much appeal to ignore anymore. I bought a Behringer SRC on the idea that it would providea flexable port to do that with. But have I done anything with it yet? No. More interested in nice deals on Amazon and such to acquire music for now. Which reminds me that I need to see if there is a deal on that Tom Waits set that I've been keeping an eye on.
Happy hunting :)

Reading the clock is more nerdy than clever – it displays the time in BCD. Each column is a digit of the time and the value of each column is simply the sum of its illuminated LEDs. The row values (from bottom to top) are 1, 2, 4 & 8. At first blush, it may seem like a convoluted way to observe the time, but it's really rather simple and efficient. Besides, the patterns entertain weirdos (which I can't deny being). I needed something that I could read from 16', or more, without the aid of glasses – and I didn't want just a large digital clock. My first thought was a nixie tube clock, but when I found this, I couldn't resist.
That Dawnrazor character launched me down the network audio path, although it wasn't what he actually encouraged me to do. Setting up a computer for audio in my bedroom system hooked me on the concept of abandoning the physical media. Once I built up a significant library, I fell in love with the convenience of being able to queue up whatever struck my fancy at the moment. It's especially convenient since all of the media (except concert DVDs/BluRays) is in the house instead of the listening room. Now, I don't have to decide what I want to hear before heading to the cave.
For whiz-bang coolness, the SONOS is hard to beat. The subscription service of Pandora doesn't sound too bad and it's an excellent way to find 'new' music to buy. The Squeezebox Touch is a great little device, so I've read. The Bryston player is in an entirely different league, however. Steer clear of the Marantz NA-7001 if gapless playback is important to you – my understanding is that it isn't alone in that deficiency (and not one professional reviewer bothered to mention it (nor did the manufacturer)).
Once you dip your foot in this pool, you'll want to dive into it.
I hear you about Amazon - I'm an Amazon junkie (addicted to a few other Internet sources for music too).

Ah, I see now. The picture I was seeing was a hair fuzzy so I wasn't sure that there was some detail to it that I was missing. Now I know. I wonder what that would look like in hex? A:10:2B ? A little too out there perhaps.
The SONOS looks a lot like what I would be interested in. The user interface is really key and needs to be accomodating. That and to be able to pipe in background music in other parts of the house. That's most of what I am missing. That would allow me to bring the music to me rather than having to set time aside to listen to new acquisitions in the music room. I might just do that.
-
Everyone knows that having a clock in the rig makes it sound better. Just ask Tice
-
There’s probably no slicker interface than what SONOS provides. As I understand it, they network neatly to provide music everywhere (I’ll find out eventually). SONOS isn’t the final word in sonic refinement. It serves a different goal, but it serves it quite well. The Connect has a digital domain volume control, but I kept mine at full tilt. I also used it with an external DAC. On its own, it’s okay, but… Used with a good DAC, it’s surprisingly satisfying. Mine is now in my bedroom system and I plan to add satellites. It should be perfect for providing a background music system. The services available via the Internet are likely to be unmatched by its competitors.
---
Ha, so I should refer to this as my BCD Audio Clock, eh? Of course, you could also ask Machina Dynamica. I bought the large version for the greatest level of enhancement.

There's something I want to address if I may.
Everyone knows Peter Gunn and some of you may have had some squabbles with him over the years, others had the opposite experience.
I would like the welcome him to the Planar Circle and I'd appreciate it if everyone else could do the same.
This is a different place (my wife would agree with that one!) and a different atmosphere.
He has a lot to offer and agree or disagree, when all is said and done it's just stereo stuff so isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things.
This Circle is what you make of it and you've all helped make it a good one.
Thank you.

Well this is the internet after all. I say this because I believe everyone should have access to this site. But I am somewhat reluctant to see him join because he doesn't seem to be able to take differing opinions very well and I would hate to see these Maggie threads degenerate to the mess the AA planar thread became.
The man makes beautiful products none of which I have heard. If things get bad here, I will simply vote with my feet (so to speak).

Steve,
Part of the reason why some of us migrated away from the AA was to get away from the "Peter Gunn" nonsense. (I had another (larger) issue as well, but that's another subject.) Hopefully, the much more active moderation on this forum/circle will alleviate any issues in that direction.
Anyways, he does bring a decent knowledge/experience of panel repair techniques (certainly valuable information.) Unfortunately, it's a double-edged sword with all of the other issues that come along with his participation.
Personally, I think "Peter Gunn" should have his own forum/circle/whatever....(as many of the Industry types do here.) That way he could moderate with impunity and not be bothered by pesky questions and skeptics who highlight inconvenient things. I have to give JohnR props because that format seems to work well on AC.
Good luck,
Dave.

I doubt that we'll see very much of the old boy as he's got other irons in the fire.
Things won't go to the dogs here.
Enough of that, back to our regularly scheduled program.
-
I for one am happy to see Peter, or anyone else for that matter, come and join us here.
I have said it before, and I will say it again, this is a great place to be!
It seems to me that it is "audio family" here.
No nastiness/edgy-ness just sharing together and helping one another in a great audio spirit.
I certainly believe that a good environment brings out the best in people (just as a bad environment brings out the worst!).
Yes, this is a great place to be.
I am sure that Peter will fit in well and feel right at home and I am sure that the people here will be very supportive of him.
Welcome from Bruce Peter!
-
When I first started poking around here I got off to a rocky start but decided to hang out a bit more. What I noticed is that all of the Circles set the bar so high regarding standards of conduct.
You don't see that very often on audio sites where so many discussions end up making me think of Ruth Buzzi and her purse.
I've said it before but I do believe that JohnR set the overall tone and it attracts people who just want to enjoy themselves.
And with that it's Bedtime for Bonzo as the alarm clock goes off way too early.
Feast your eyeballs on this vintage beauty, all of way from the United States of, er, Singapore, making my life miserable for decades!
-
All kidding aside, Steve is correct, JohnR sets the tone very well around here. He allows the Moderator/Facilitators to do their thing, which is good if they are fair, which most seem to be.
A good rule of thumb might be, if you disagree with someone else, state the reasons why in a non-personal manner, and respect the others opinion/position no matter how silly it might be.
For the record, I used PG's web page on how to fix delaminations (with some slight modifications) and my speakers sound great and it saved me a lot of money. I mixed the dap with acetone to make it thinner. The acetone will evaporate and the dap will hold the same, but is easier to work with. I let it dry for a couple of days to be safe.
This was over a year ago and no problems.
So thanks PG for sharing your expertise on repairing older Maggie's!
Jim

Hey, Steve~
Newb to this forum but certainly not to other audio & various forums!
Posting pics of my Carver AL-IIIs in the Planar Porn area soon....

Hey, Gary,
Welcome to the forum.

Thanks, Steve. ]

Welcome TN Rabbit,
I'm glad to see another Carver fan here. I recently attended my first Carverfest... it was great to meet everyone and put faces on those I've exchanged posts with on the CarverSite. Maybe we can meet at Carverfest 2013. Anyway.... welcome to the Audio Circle!
-
Thanks, Charlie! I'd love to get down to your place one day & hear those stats you built. They look fantastic & Martin says they kick @$$~

In case you guys don't know it, Gary (TNRabbit) is actually the enabler extraordinairre so hide your wallets or else you'll end up with all kinds of new toys.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Podium Sound here:
http://www.podium-sound.com/index.html?menu=70817A (http://www.podium-sound.com/index.html?menu=70817A)
Sounds like an interesting concept. 6moons and StereoMojo have good things to say about them. I'd love to hear them someday. I'll just have to be happy with my Magnestand MMGs... :D
Perhaps Magnestand could be added to the list of links at the head of this thread?

Hi Steve/Planar Circle Moderator,
Although I’ve visited audiocircle many times over the years, I’ve not posted as far as I can remember. I’ve been an audiophile since the late ‘60s and a DIYer since 2006 and have enjoyed learning how to build components including amps, preamp, and more. After owning various other speakers, I purchased a pair of Magnepan 1.6QRs in 2013 and later sent them off to Magnestand for pgunn’s mods. I’ve never regretted it and enjoy them together with two REL subs in a dedicated listening room. I may very well be the oldest person to join the Planar circle and hope to continue learning while contributing whenever I can by sharing what I’ve learned about audio over a period of many years including the present.
My first project was a complete mod for the Dynaco ST 70 designed by my audio guru and teacher who is an audio professional. My first amp was a Dynaco. It was the beginning of many years of enjoying and loving music.
