I have used similar Vapor Audio Nimbus speakers with my electronics at several shows and they beat everything else I had used in the room, so I had to have some.
I finally got them and they are amazing. These have new midrange drivers that are improved over the original Blacks and even the White ceramic drivers. The midrange is liquid smooth. Top end is crystalline clear. Bass is low distortion and extends to the depths of purgatory. A pure pleasure to listen to and a great match to my SET tube monoblock amps at 35W each. Very good off-axis response, so standing and to the side, you still get a good stereo image. Unbelievable for movies.
Not only that, they are simply beautiful.

I am now selling my original reference speakers, 4 foot ribbons with bass boxes and custom wiring and crossover components, including high-end caps and Jensen air-core inductors for a paltry $4K plus shipping. I also have 200lbs of lead bricks that I put on top of the bass boxes that I can sell, but shipping will be spendy. These lead bricks help with bass tightness. These ribbons are not like other ribbons. Very dynamic and extended. Crossover is at 650Hz. These can actually create an acoustic shock wave. They are efficient enough to use with 30W tube amps and drive well with 4 ohm transformer output. The off-axis response is excellent. This is why they are great for shows. They break down into the panels and the bass boxes to ship in 4 boxes.

Nice. That only took what? 3 years?

My wife tells me that I have become more patient as I aged. She seems to have less patience, which makes up for it.....
Ryan assured me that he is determined to hire the people that he needs for both customer service and manufacturing to make the business flourish and deliver in a more timely manner. Unfortunately, he had to raise prices to make this happen. IMO, even with the higher prices, his products are still priced lower than what he competes with and mostly beats.

Steve,
I hope you enjoy your Vapors as much as I have mine :thumb:

Vapor Audio does seem to be going Big Time, last weeks LAAS 2017 saw the Nimbus used with EMM Labs.

Those are gorgeous, Steve. What is the color?

These were mine. I took them home after the show. They sound better in my setup.

Its a burnt-orange 3-step metal-flake finish. Ryan thinks its the best looking speaker yet. I like some of the exotic woods that he has used in the past on the Cirrus, but these are probably impractical on the Nimbus.

Here's a shot I took of them as we were putting the crossovers inside. Laying on their side you can see how the color changes with viewing angle. In low light they turn a deep root beer color.
$550/quart

The title of the thread is true. :thumb:
What are the new midrange drivers? I was really impressed with the ATs!
Beautiful color too... wow.
-
Heard them at the LA show, what a great sounding room.

I know the numbers of speakers you've listened to, Steve, and for you to pick Nimbus to use in your home, I want to say that I'm honored to have built them for you. Thank you sir!

The original Nimbus black used the very nice Wavecor paper cone WF152, a variant of the mids used in the Stiff Breeze. The Stiff Breeze was the inspiration for Nimbus. We were so impressed with the sound we got from that modest MTM that we felt it deserved a 15" woofer to augment the low end. Nimbus' shape was a derivative of my own personal home speakers that EdRo built for me back in 2010.
This latest incarnation uses a customized version of the Audio Technology SDKM 6" mid.

Congrats Steve! They look amazing....
What are those quarter round trap/diffusers? Brand?
Thanks

Wow... how much coverage do you get with that one quart of paint?

I believe just the two cabinets . . . and then a gallon of clear.

Those are ASC tube traps from the Oregon company Acoustic Sciences Corp.
I use them mostly as diffusors to counteract the effect of the flat-screen TV behind. Placement is critical to getting a sharp image in the audio.

I like that idea Steve. I have a 55" flat screen in-between mine and have put a cloth over it when listening, but I think I like the idea of a diffusor better possibly. Hmmm....

The 1/4 round tube traps work better. The TV screen simply disappears.

I'll have to look for those then and figure out if I can get a pair to try out. Thanks.

Steve, which Hz are you using to diffuse the sound around the TV? Thanks

These are quarter-round tube traps from ASC in Oregon. They act both as bass traps and scatter the backwave to improve imaging. You can actually tune the image with these. I bought them used, so I'm not sure of their specs. Not that critical, just need the round surface to go next to the flatscreen.

Hope you are doing good. Thanks for the update. I am probably going to buy some 45" tall silk plants to put in between the speakers/tv first. Then figure it out from there. I have a spec of glare from the screen (I cover said screen and it's gone). I do have a few question on the server though. Let me know if I can call one of these days. Thanks.
It still sounds better than any computer based server I've auditioned. ;)
