RM30-C No Bass
« on: 25 Oct 2017, 12:24 am »
I have a RM30-C as a center channel. I haven't noticed until I ran it without the subwoofer or sides, but the sub-woofers are not actively working. I have tried to fiddle with the L-Pads, changed the cables, and each time I run a signal through it the drivers do not respond. Would anyone be able to recommend some further testing or analysis, or should I just bring it into a local speaker repairman?

Silly question.  But are you sure your sending low frequency signals to speaker?

Some set-ups will not send bass signals depending on setup parameters.
I.e. Small speaker selection etc...

No, its not silly at all. I am running with a Marantz 5011. In the speaker setup, I have the center channel set as 'large', and it has the same cross-over settings as my left and right channels.

Are the short jumper cables in place between the two sets of terminals?

If they are present, use an ohm meter to check continuity.

The jumpers are firmly in place, however, I do not have a meter to check them with. It sounds like I will need to visit amazon.com

Continuity may also be checked with a low voltage light bulb or LED, a battery and piece of wire; in this case, the jumper cable.

Multimeters are useful & inexpensive. Recommend adding one to your toolbox.

The L pads only control the high and midrange panels. They don't do anything for the bass drivers.

Could you put the speaker in your hi-fi system (assuming you have one) and see if it plays bass then?

The bass-mids cross over is at 280Hz.

Brian typically used the "upper" binding posts for the woofers.

If you run a Full Range signal into the woofers, and no sound, then it is clearly an issue with the woofer circuit. (from binding post to woofers.

A long overdue update, as I have been distracted by a number of things the past few months. I was able to get the speaker to an amp/speaker specialist who tested all of the components for me, and he confirmed that the only issues he could find were with the drivers themselves, one is frozen and the other has a burnt speaker coil. It looks like i am going to be in the market to buy some replacements once again.

Don't cry.  Hopefully, you'll get the RM30C speakers up and running again.   :D

Next, don't trash the suspect woofers.  I'd send them out for repair first.  Even if you can find replacement woofers, I'd still get the original woofers fixed, to keep as spares.  So, contact Bill LeGall at Millersound.  Bill is probably the top speaker repair guy in the country.  Plus, Bill's repair rates are very reasonable.

As far as finding new woofers, contact Patrick Malaga.  Patrick purchased all of the old VMPS stock.  He might have parts?  PM him through AC.  Patrick also posts VMPS parts for sale ad's on the San Fransisco Craigs List.  Here's one of his ad's.  PM him through CL too.  He might respond to that faster.

Also, Misco still shows the LLC62W-8A mega-woofer on their site.  You should be able to order direct through them.

And one other thing.  Once you get the center speaker up and running again; set it to Small.  Less stress on it that way.   8)

Good luck.

thanks for the advice. I've reached out across the board, so hopefully one option or other yields fruit!
