Amp Question.
« on: 13 Jun 2017, 12:25 am »
I have a pair of Stratos monoblocks.  My question is what happens to the sound when the caps get old?  Are there identifying sound traits?

Thanks.

Yup...it's not like a tube going bad,  but more of a diminishing sound overall...most noticeable in dynamics and clarity at higher volume...the easiest way to describe it is that it just feels off at some point........

So a slightly softening treble, and a less defined bass output fit the description?

Probably yes....as there's also the ever present issue of bias out of whack...however, softening treble and less bass is kind of opposed in terms of biasing changes....

Rule of thumb for any electrolytic power supply cap if you want to be safe:
change them every 7-10 years just to be sure

My pair is from 2006, so it might be time...

I would...the re-capping is reasonable, there will be a complete check-out  done for free,  and we would have the chance of doing even some Kismet upgrades....
