Learning about (sad) situations from music

Learning about (sad) situations from music

If you're one to listen to the words of songs, as I am, every once in a while, you learn something -- generally sad and touching -- from music.

I'm listening to "The Magdalene Laundries" by The Chieftains.  Great song, great music, freaking depressing imagery:

And then there's "My Name is Emmett Till" by Emmylou Harris:

Yikes! 

I had never heard of either of these issues until I heard these songs and then did a search for what had happened. 

Anyone else learn something like this from music?

There are tons of songs out there like those.

Here's one to sample, Sniper by Harry Chapin. It's pretty disturbing.
