JBL LSR305 $99 each shipped!
« on: 4 Dec 2017, 02:54 am »
At B&H Photo or Guitar Center. Guitar Center has them in red as well as black for this price. Now if they would only put the corresponding subwoofer on sale...

I bought a pair on Black Friday.

Amazingly good speakers. I got the piano black gloss version from Massdrop which have slightly better driver pair matching but regardless - they are AWESOME!

Best,
Anand.

Let me guess. Because of the measurements?

The better driver matching was a given in the Massdrop order, but I was definitely into the piano black gloss so I sprung for the extra cash!

So yeah, it's great that the drivers are matched more closely, but ultimately even with nice measurements, they sound excellent.

Where in your house are you guys using these? Like your desktop system, 3rd system, Bedroom? Basement? And whats your source? And how do you hook them up? Just curious. I want to try a pair but wonder where that heck I would put them?

I use them in the family room, perched up on Pangea stands 28 inch height, $50 isoacoustics stands on top of that, toed in a good 30 degrees. A good 2 feet from the front wall. Sources are either an Auralic Aries Mini direct to the JBL's or an iPhone. Although the Aries Mini does have better performance, the iPhone (particularly with AQ's Dragon Fly Red/Black) is really quite good as well.

It rivals significantly more expensive loudspeakers.

We had a party on Thanksgiving day and the number of ladies that ordered the LSR305 for that visit was quite inspiring.

So you essentially had a "Tupperware/Amway/Pampered Chef/Avon Party" to turn ladies into audiophiles?  Congrats on such excellent work. Did you get a commission on all the sales?

Je, je, je....

JBL LSR305 modification - Ferrite Cores

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/11396795-post4.html

Why je, je, je?

My cheap tweaked KEF Q100:

[IMG] http://maty.galeon.com/WP-imagenes/kef-q100/KEF-Q100-filter-rockwool.jpg

With Würth 150 kHz ferrite, which are the ones that have better specifications (like Schaffner RF/EMI filters too).

When I tried with woofer+tweeter cables I had U sound = brighter :(

After I would try with DIY filter cables like these:

[IMG] http://maty.galeon.com/WP-imagenes/hard/cables-Schaffner-filter-Wurth-ferrite-150Khz-IEC-C13-Schurter-from-ATL.jpg

Schaffner FN 9244B + Schurter IEC C13 connector + unshielded power cable

[IMG] http://maty.galeon.com/WP-imagenes/hard/IEC-inlet-filter-Schaffner-FN_9244-typical-filter-attenuation.png

With 110 volts -> maybe 3 A 1 A because they have very efficient class D amps!

With 230 volts -> 1 A

Question: has anyone tried the LSR305 mod mentioned above?  Sounds simple enough that even I could do it.  Might be worth a try.

But with Würth 150 kHz ferrites!

Usually in audio the problems are in RF band ( < 1 Mhz).

Cheap ferrites attenuates > 1 Mhz (EMI band). Video.

PS: I also tried with two passes of the woofer cables but the sound was worse.

PS: the second best ferrites attenuate > 300 kHz.

Currently I am using them in a desktop system. Circa 2008 iMac to Audioquest Dragonfly 1.2 to Audioquest Jitterbug to LSR305s.

Looks like these 305 specials only have the balanced inputs and no RCA inputs.

Has anyone tried them in a surround application. $500 for 5 is pretty good value in surround speakers.

Yes, All the JBL 305’s only have XLR & TRS (1/4 inch) balanced inputs. My iPhone connects with a 1/8 mini connector to TRS 1/4 inch plug into the 305. My Auralic Mini has RCA outputs and the cable is an RCA on one end and TRS (1/4 inch) on the other.

All the cables are inexpensive and easily available (including adapters if you wanted to use your favorite RCA cable).

Anand.

If they were for me, I would like Neutrik connectors and star-quad cable.

I use this in my cheap recabled headphones and I would buy it again and again! Look at the great specs!
