2012 jaguar xj

I have been looking at this car with the  portfolio package. It has 32,000 miles on it. Are the reliability questions still there or should I look away and check out the 17 Lincoln MKZ.

I still own a 1999 XJ-R and my wife has a 2013 MKZ after selling her 1997 Jag VanDenPlas. The MKZ is a good modern car, which I like, but the older and newer Jags are in a different class for material quality, ride and appointments. Worse gas mileage though. I recommend you drive them both and decide, but you'll get a lot more refinement and luxury for your $ with the Jaguar, IMO, if that is what you want.
There is a Jaguar owners forum which discusses issues with the various models. Spend a couple hours and read up on what people there experience. I've always thought the modern Jags got a bad rap for problems, as I've had two very trouble free, enjoyable XJs for over 15 years each.

Jaguar is far better than it used to be in the reliability department.  That said, the XJ is a big, expensive, complex car and there's a lot to go wrong.  The new Jags have five-year factory warranty and if I were you I'd find one with at least a year of factory warranty left.  That way you have time to settle any issues that the car might have before dipping into your savings account.

I've had five Jaguars!  Only the two old ones were nightmares (though beautiful of course) -- OTOH I now steer clear of any car with an active suspension, which the XJ has.  The air suspension components start to go after a few years.

If I were going to buy a new Lincoln I think it'd be the new Continental AWD.

I agree with both jonbee and Archguy. We've had several Jags and current have a reasonably low mileage 07 XJL thtat my wife drives part time. As Archguy mentioned, the active suspension can be problematic. We ended up ripping ours out and going to Arnott and doing coil overs. Actually, I like the ride even better now. Best part is wasn't overly expensive when compared to the stock (and even the aftermarket) air ride replacement parts.

After this one wears out, we'll likely do another XJ or an F type coupe. There's just something about a Jag....

It might not be cheap, but it likely would be fun, especially if you carry passengers in the rear seat often—I read that that's a pleasant environment.

Good advice from Archguy about the five year warranty aspect.

I will look into the warranty a little deeper. Everyone gave some great information and I thank you.

I always drive older luxury vehicles that I purchase when original owners want to give up. Currently I drive an 11 year old XJ8-L. This thing is practically worthless now on the used market according to KBB and the like, so I just plan to enjoy it until it starts costing too much to maintain. Despite their rep for being fussy, which I read about for years too, mine has been relatively pain-free  (touch wood) over the years other than routine maintenance, though as noted, the Jag air suspension system has some issues, so I did have that replaced by an after-market option from specialist jag shop here (not the main dealer who is to be avoided). Mine now has a few bumps and bruises (these big bodies seem to be a magnet for other car doors in lots etc but the engine makes it a joy to drive still, and even with age, she catches the eye when cleaned up. In comparison with the other cars I've owned through this buying philosophy, only a Lexus has been more reliable, and none have been as much fun to drive.
