This is an interesting pairing, covering a wide stylistic range…

Anyone who thinks they don't much like bluegrass should listen to Gillian Welch and her long time musical partner David Rawlings, both graduates of the prestigious  Berklee College of Music in Boston. An interesting Wikipedia write up:

Bluegrass is the new Jazz.

Except when it comes to Bella Fleck, where Bluegrass is the old Jazz too.

I've grown to like roots and bluegrass music much more than I ever thought, as I really started out listening to 80s alt rock when a teen/college.

I was hoping to see Kishi Bashi play will Tall Tall Trees at his SF show this Friday, as they often tour together, but TTT is not with him for this show. but KB will play with a String Quartet. I am looking forward to it.

Thanks for the video.

Me too!  :thumb:
I enjoy bluegrass music and have listened to many fine performances. And this Steve Earle release is superb. Highly recommended!

Some I love, some not so much - even by the same band, on the same album!

Not much that has Alison Krauss' voice on it that I don't like, but sometimes the accompanying musical styling does not do it for me.

Kishi Bashi live last night was everything I had hoped for and more....Tall Tall Trees-Mike did play with KB and the string quartet. And while there was a banjo on many and another song with a mandolin, I wouldn't put Kishi Bashi music in the bluegrass genre. how about symphonic electronic art music? or just music.

I enjoy bluegrass and could set and listen to the guitar of Tony Rice or Bryan Sutton all day long.

Bluegrass: Chamber music for Woodchucks and Red Necks, and that's a good thing.

+1 on Tony Rice  :thumb:   Tone Poems V.1

PizzaTapes  What makes this recording so cool is listening to Jerry Garcia being so impressed w Tony's playing. I imagine it is not easy to impress Jerry w acoustic guitar picking. A true musicians musician.

Also Luvmeesum Gillain Welch.... BBC Full Concert St, Lukes 2004

And the only thing better than Gillan Welch is Giliian w Old Crow Medicine Show singing "The Weight"

+100.  Get either Time (The Revelator) or Harrow and The Harvest...and sit back.  They have been on my rotation every day since I discovered them (late).

I think Hank Dogs would be considered by some to more folk music, but genre labels have blurry lines at best. If you like Hank Dogs, I'll bet you'd like Chris Pureka. And in a more popular vein you might also like Brandi Carlile and maybe Jonatha Brook. Folk and bluegrass have become large parts of my listening these days. That coming from an old rocker...

This isn't strictly Bluegrass but she has roots in it as well as other styles. Check out Sarah Jarosz if you haven't heard her.

She's pretty amazing. Especially when you consider her age. One would never guess if they heard her and didn't know. Seems like an old soul in a young body. She carries the torch into another generation...hurray!

She is very talented.  I couldn't help recalling Nickel Creek while listening to this.

If you ever have the opportunity to hear her in concert,  don't miss it. I really liked her vocals but hadn't fully realized before I saw her in person what good musicians she and her bandmates are.

Shaidri and Hank Alrich. I like the simplicity of this and the attitude. I guess it's not hard core bluegrass, but close enough for me - the mandolin work is pure bluegrass.
