Title: How to burn Hi-Res downloads
Post by: Stylus on 17 Jun 2009, 05:19 pm
I have the hi-res download of NIN ? The slip and wanted to burn it to a DVD for playback on my Oppo 980.  Is this possible?  The one I tried did not work.

One way to do it is to convert it to DVD-Audio (MLP) so the Oppo sees it as a DVD-Audio and either plays it normally as a 24/96 DVD-A or sends it out 96k via coax (assuming LPCM is set for 96k or greater in the oppo menu).  The software called DVDAudio Solo has a trial license that allows for up to five full discs being burnt, or unlimited if burnt DVD is less than 700mb (i.e test a few tracks).
http://www.cirlinca.com/download.htm

I have an Oppo 980 (and SLIP in 96k; I use wavpack and Transporter to listen via 24/96) so I'll try both this idea as well as just burning 24/96 wav files for coax output (likely won't work via analog or coax)..

EDIT:  Darn, my trial expired.  Try it, though.  Just drag the flac or wav files over, then hit export and write.  It will create a DVD_Audio disc that the Oppo will handle like any other.

Ted,

Do you know if this works (DVD-A stream on coax out) on all of the Oppo's or is it just specific to the DV-980?  Apparently they just sell this one and the BDP-83 now.

Tom, ''m not sure.  If your Oppo has a menu item that allows LPCM to 192k then I would assume it works.  There is a quote somewhere on the net that says the Oppo may be allowed to send 192k via coax (seems illegal) because it gets around the copywright by also truncating to 16 bits.  Not sure, and not sure how to tell...any DAC I've had lights up the correct sample rate (i.e 192k, 176k for HRX made into DVD-A, etc) but doesn't allow for any bit depth analysis.  Sounds good though.  :)

Actually I don't have an Oppo at the moment.  Just thought about picking one up as a transport to use for this reason with the Bryston DAC.  It tells you the native sample rate, but of course no bit depth.  Probably best to stick with a used 980, but the BD-83 would be nice

That's what I'm using it with right now, the Bryston DAC, a very very nice sub-$2k offering.

UPDATE:  I downloaded the trial of the upgraded version and it worked.  I burnt a 24/96 NIN "The Slip".  It lights up the Bryston 96k light via Oppo 980 coax/SPDIF oput, and plays very nicely through analog outs too.  it shows on the Oppo front panel as DVD-Audio LPCM.

Great, I will try this as soon as I get home tonight.  I am just using the analog out from the Oppo into a no video 2-channel system.  Primary source is vinyl, but this hi-res digital is starting to peak my interests.  aa

I've had success using http://dvd-audio.sourceforge.net/ on Windows and playing the DVD-Audio discs in my OPPO BDP-83.  It's open source, and it's possible that the sourcecode is already set for compiling in OSX.

I've looked everywhere for a DVD audio creator for the Mac, and have come up pretty empty.  There are a few open source applications out there that create DVD-A files, but since most DVD players do not support the DVD-A standard I was looking to create DVD-V files that I could play back on a standard DVD player that can output 24 bit 96 KHz data through the coaxial digital output.

So I had to resort to Windows and this program:
http://www.audio-dvd-creator.com/ (http://www.audio-dvd-creator.com/)

Did the trick for me.  It basically outputs a VIDEO_TS folder that I can burn to DVD using any DVD burning software.
The problem is that it is only Windows based.  I I had to resort to running it in Parallels on my Mac, but this arrangement at least gets the job done properly.

Toast (Roxio) will do this - aiff 24/96 setting in Custom on dvd-video window - burn.  Works.  I've found issues with accessing individual tracks - returns to track it was at (needs autoplay setting), after playing your single selected track.

Works very well.

Burn is a nice easy to use program with a shortcoming.

It cannot create high resolution video DVDs.  It can only create audio DVD-As.

For those of us that do not have DVD-A or universal players Burn is pretty useless.
Remember that most standard DVD players can play back and pass through 24 bit 96kHz audio files through their coaxial port using standard DVD-video.  Burn cannot handle that type of DVD authoring.

"Util" tab

drop flac files in the file list(wavs with nonstandard headers are finicky.  use flacs instead).  then create the dvd-audio .iso image

burn in toast or disk utility

i moved the dvd-audiofile functionality into xACT at some point last year to not require a separate app.  If you want multiple groups, though, dvd-audiofile still offers that feature while xACT doesn't.  I didn't think people really cared about multiple groups, so didn't move it over to xACT

Either should work; DVD-R's usually do not need to be formatted, DVD+R's sometimes do.  I use DVD+R (Verbatim brand).

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I am trying to burn true DVD-Audio discs on my mac.  I do not mean DVD-V discs with audio only.  I mean the DVD-Audio discs that play on said equipped players.

I did this before successfully with Discwelder Bronze, but now that software is no longer supported so I cannot get it to open.

I tried Burn mentioned above, and I was successful to a point and then it started to simply close the session as soon as it started.  I have tossed at least a dozen discs trying different things with it.  I am importing WAV files downloaded from HDTracks.

Cirlinca looks to do DVD-V and not DVD-Audio anymore but I downloaded it anyway just to see.  It looks to do DVD-A in Windows (which is running on my mac using Fusion) but it won't actually write to the disc.

When I download DVD-Audiophile and try to open it, it give me a message that the app is damage and needs to be move to the trash.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Please help - HDTracks help line isn't getting me very far which is disappointing.

Lastly - Can I just get a cheap PC, install a burner drive and dedicate it to burning discs?  What would the machine need by way of hardware?  Would a PC with a $50 Blu-ray/DVD burner, 4 gig RAM, and couple hundred gig HDD do the trick?

so it didn't create an .iso image in the output folder you selected?

it uses some command line tools (https://sourceforge.net/projects/dvd-audio/) that never quite worked correctly for all files, and when it worked, it had most success with flac files.

I tried both flac and wav, and when I hit execute, there was a flash of something, like a window that opened and immediately closed and then nothing.  Just Crickets.

I guess I will resort to trying to burn them to a Blu Ray disc.  Would there be any downside?

I don't even know if hi rez audio burning to Blurry is possible, but at least there looks to be some information on it where with DVD-Audio everyone responds thinking DVD-V.

thank you for trying scb

I tried this again with xACT since I didn't realize I was talking to the developer.

I used two different MACs, and had the same unsuccessful result so perhaps there is operator error at play here. (I hope)

MAC 1 = MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) - 10.10.5 - using external superdrive
MAC 2 = Mac Mini Late 2009 - OS X 10.8.5 - using internal drive

The command line tool xACT and DVD-Audiofile use has never worked the way it was supposed to, and newer versions work even less than older ones. Unfortunately, development on that project has basically died

What version of DVD-Audiofile did you have? I can resurrect that one and make it work under the current OS to see if that works

The version of DVD-Audiophile that I downloaded looks to be 3.3.

So far, I have not found a single way of burning a hi resolution music file regardless of media, file type, or software.  This is all on Mac.

My attempts to contact Minnetonka have been fruitless even though I have my receipt and all the reference numbers for Discwelder Bronze that I purchased.

Should I just go but a $200 quad core windows machine just for burning these discs?  Use Circlina or something?

I'd like to play pack DVD-Audio or Blu-ray audio on my normal hifi player which is oppo based.  That is all I want...

Yes, that's going to work.  Click on the question mark, it will tell you what to do to allow DVD-Audiofile to load (what I mentioned before, change permissions to allow any app to work), and then everything should be fine.

Ahhh - duhh.  Thanks.  A similar thing happens with other downloads, but I have two different operation systems and this one didn't act as I expected.

OK, so now I get DVD-Audiofile to open, load the files and create the ISO.  I then get this screen:

Somewhere along the line I did create an ISO image before, just not with DVD-Audiofile.  Now that I have opened DVD-Audiofile, I prefer it because it is so easy.  However, I still don't have a playable DVD-Audio disc yet.

Now any suggestions on how to get this burnt to play like a DVD-Audio disc?  Simply burning the ISO doesn't accomplish this.

I tried this:
Insert a blank disc.
Start Disk Utility.
From the File menu, choose Open Disk Image and select the ISO to be burned.
In the list of volumes, you will now see an item representing the ISO file. Select it.
Click the Burn button and follow the instructions.

When I put the disc in my player, it shows as a DVD-Audio, but it pretty much locks up in play showing all zeros in the display (track #, time...).  When looking physically at the disc, there is no way there is 4 gig of data on it.

Burn the .iso to disc (I usually choose my Desktop for simplicity).  Then use Toast; put in a blank DVD-R (or DVD+R, although those have marginally less capacity), choose the .iso (you can drag and drop it into the project window if you want to) and burn.  If you want to burn just using OS X you will need to visit the Apple support communities, El Capitan has made it a bit more complicated, but older versions of Toast work just fine and it's fairly easy to find one for free download.

Make your .iso file is the "right" size; sometimes you need to redo the "create .iso" process a couple of times, it should take at least a minute or two and there is a status bar if it is doing it right.
Title: Re: How to burn Hi-Res downloads
Post by: dnd on 21 Feb 2016, 05:26 pm
How big should the iso file be?  For about 4 gig of music, the iso is 1.1Mb.

Also, How do I burn the iso in Toast.  I can burn the music like a regular DVD, but it is basically a DVD-Video with only audio, not a DVD-Audio.  And when I burned it, I just dragged the wav files into toast without touching the iso I created with DVD-Audiofile.

I am sorry to be so dependent here.  I feel like this is never-ending in spite of your hand-holding me through it.

Title: Re: How to burn Hi-Res downloads
Post by: rbbert on 21 Feb 2016, 08:30 pm
DVD-Audiofile tells you how big the project is (in the initial file choosing window); that's how big the .iso file should be (approximately).  I'm not at my computer today, but Toast should have an option to burn a disc image (no disc type specified).

I burned 2 DVD-A's yesterday, from FLAC files, using this procedure.  Both played fine on my Oppo.
Title: Re: How to burn Hi-Res downloads
Post by: dnd on 22 Feb 2016, 01:14 am
Thanks, that gives me some hope.

If you happen to do another one soon, can you let me know the size of the iso and the total size of the files you are burning?  I am trying to do about 4 gig of files (wav), and the iso is consistently 1.1 mb.  I have made a lot of iso files by this point and they are all the same size.  Seems too small to me.

**edit - I do have some Hi Res Flac files and tried those.  The iso seems much more realistic in size.  I al trying to burn this now.  In Toast, I am not sure how to do it, but I selected DVD-ROM this time around.  Seems wrong to me, but what the heck, gotta try something.  In the iso mode, it looked like it thought the disc was a CD, not a DVD.  This is why I started in DVD-ROM mode.  --  I just thought I should enter this now in case someone was to respond before I completed a few attempts.

I am using Toast Titanium BTW.

If I cannot get this done by the end of the week, I am ditching the mac and getting a cheap window machine, run circlina, and hopefully call it a day.

I'll be back home tomorrow, I'll try to tell you exactly what Toast option to choose.  I'm sure there is something in the manual about burning image.iso files, you could check there.  I strongly suspect that if you just burn the image even to DVD-ROM data it will work, because the image is of a DVD-A disc, and that's howmthe Oppo will see it.

I got it!!!!!!!!!

First - thank you so very much for your patience.  Forums can quickly turn nasty out of frustration, and you really demonstrated supreme patience and sincerity with me, so thank you very much!

For starters, when I tried to make an ISO from WAV files in DVD-Audiofile, it didn't work.  When I did it using FLAC files, it worked file provided all the files are the same bit size and resolution.  As you did, I placed the ISO on my desktop.

I went here for instructions to burn the ISO:

http://www.wikihow.com/Burn-ISO-with-Toast-Titanium

Essentially, here are the steps:

1) Open Toast (in my case Toast Titanium)
2) Select the "copy" tab
3) In the drop down menu on the left side of the work area, select "image file" (see picture below)
4) Click on the "select" button and choose your ISO file
5) Make sure you have a writable DVD in the drive of course
6) Click on "Copy" and then let it do its thing.

Job done using the instructions given over the last two days with DVD-Audiofile, backdating the Java, and dropping the security so DVD-Audiofile can load.

Again, I cannot thank you enough!

Glad it worked.  You can burn files with different resolutions to DVD-A, but you have to use separate "groups".  All the files in any one "group" need to be the same resolution.

If I do some editing on WAV or AIFF files, I always convert them to FLAC before using DVD-Audiofile for Mac.  Interestingly, the Windows version (which you can't even find anywhere anymore) works fine with WAV files.

May I ask what conversion program you use?

When I use xACT, going from wav to flac it make the files 16bit.  Is there a setting somewhere to keep them 24 bit?

Going from flac to wav, the files stay at 24 bit.

xACT doesn't convert 24 bit wav to 16 bit flac. It just tells flac to compress and that's it. Files will be the same bit depth as the originals

I don't understand that - but my lack of understanding has become well documented by now.

The windows version should use the same command line authoring code as the mac version.
