I am listening to something new here today.
« on: 25 Feb 2015, 04:39 pm »
Getting tired of having only one good FM station here, KSJN PBC classical, I was happy when Mithat Konar, a friend and consulting EE, suggested a Bluetooth Music Receiver.

So I invested $30 for a Satechi wireless bluetooth receiver and connected its optical digital output to my Fet Valve DAC and after exploring available internet audio channels for a bit, discovered a series of Audiophile music programs originating in Greece, of all places.  Its found on Radio.net.

They have five channels ranging from Classical, Baroque, and Jazz, to soft Jazz - Pop and more.

The good thing is that they stream at 320 kpbs eliminating the rough edge on string sounds heard at lower streaming rates.  I am going to call the sonic performance equal to my own broadcast FM tuner and commercials and lots of talk between music is completely eliminated.

Pretty good deal for 30 bucks.

Another great classical source is KWAX-FM, a terrific classical station based in Oregon. Here is the URL for their 320K AAC stream:
http://184.171.104.41:8000/listen.m3u?sid=1%22

Another contender used to be BBC Radio3, but they recently discontinued their excellent 320K AAC stream and now top out at a mediocre 128K mp3. Too bad, as they used to have some of the best programming. Bye bye Beeb....

I have an Onkyo 2 ch  network receiver I got from accessories4less website a few years back....so I could listen to Pandora and other net stuff. I found it had this "vTuner Internet Radio" installed in the firmware selections and its pretty good.

The little 2 ch onkyo is a neat little marvel that has not only the v Tuner, but Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius XM, Last.fm International, Slacker, Mediafly, Spotify, AUPEO! PERSONAL RADIO,  quite a selction. Ethernet cable attached and works well.

I have those little modified Pioneer Speakers Frank talked about several months ago attached to it for music and pc stuff.

Aint technology wonderful!!

and Frank the UltraValve is still running great here!!

I would also suggest poking around for NRK, which appears to be Norway public radio. They have a bunch of channels (I prefer NRK Jazz - which sounds like "an-r-koo yass" when they pronounce it) and there should be a 320 kbps stream for each. You *do* get the news on the hour, but the sound quality is excellent. It used to be listed on iTunes radio, too, and I was streaming it over AirPlay to my Omega DAC with excellent results.

So far I haven't yet found any NRK streams that are higher than 192kbps mp3.

NRK Jazz - 192kbps mp3
http://lyd.nrk.no/nrk_radio_jazz_mp3_h.m3u

NRK Jazz - 96kbps aac
http://lyd.nrk.no/nrk_radio_jazz_aac_h

Although the aac+ compression algorithm is superior to aac, and aac superior to mp3 (given the same bitrate), in this case the mp3 stream being twice the bitrate of the aac stream is better sounding to my ears (but closer than one might think).

Linn has a record label and apparently they play only the artists that are on it. Some are good but the playlist is kind of monotonous as a result. I remember every time I logged in, this same jazz female vocalist album seemed to be on.

You can copy at simple text editor this code and save with xml extension.  *******.xml

After you must import to the audio player. In Windows I prefer now MusicBee 2.5 beta because it uses BASS audio library. It can use Wasapi and ASIO but my DAC (ODAC USB) sounds better with BASS.
