Hi Laura - Did Grace and the rest of the band beat on the drums together on one of their encore songs?

Swedish songstress Lykke Li at The Fox Theater Oakland. Arrived very late so I was pretty far back in the Gen Admission zone. Fun show, but being a newish band they don't have a lot of material so it was not very long. but that is fine, "it's a school night" oh wait, I am still up!

The New Pornographers at the Gothic Theater in Englewood CO on Saturday night. Supported by a young New York band called The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. They were pretty good. They have one album and it's out in vinyl so I bought it. Guitar pop. TNP were outstanding, both Dan Bejar and Neko Case were there.

Hi Laura,

If I knew TNP was playing in CO I would have attended RMAF this year.      The Pains... have been around for about ten years.  They have two previous albums and an EP before their new release this year.   I have their self-titled 2005 album and saw them play two years ago at the Bowery Ballroom.  Sounds like a great concert Saturday night and hope you had a good time at RMAF.  See you next year at the show.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I missed seeing you at RMAF. I was not aware that the Pins had another album. I saw a EP CD they were selling but opted for the vinyl of their new album. The venue is an art deco era former movie theater. When I was young we would go to the Gothic to see Saturday cartoons and a movie. The removed the seats so it is a SRO venue with a few seats in the balcony. The concert was well worth it although it didn't start until 9 and it was 12:30 by the time I got back to the hotel.

Hi Laura,

Sounds like a nice place to see a concert.  If I remember before I go to RMAF next year, I'll check out the concert schedule in and around Denver.  Glad it was a good concert.

That's what I did. I checked out AXS, Ticketmaster and the different venues in the city and bought my TNP ticket before I went to Denver. One year I caught Alanis Morissette the Thursday night before RMAF started.

Back in Sept 18th saw Bootsy Collins at the State Theater in Falls Church VA.  Atrocious sound mixing even by pro audio standards (bass & overall volume WAY to high).  A LOT of noodling around by Bootsy & co a la Parliament / Funkadelic shows - i.e building up to nothing, but a sprinkle of great moments.  Still worth it to see Bootsy in all the costumes + theatrics.

Tonight : Adrian Belew Power Trio at Jammin Java in Vienna VA.  Pretty decent sound quality, loud but not too loud.  Good place to see show - very close and intimate. Low to reasonable ticket prices, easy parking.

Some may know Belew from King Crimson / Frank Zappa & much more.  A good to sometimes great concert.  Bassist (Julie Slick) + Drummer (Tobias Ralf) were very tight & talented.  Belew given his quite advanced age was remarkable & was clearly enjoying himself.  They'll be back in the area @ Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis in December. Well worth it.

Adrien Belew is 65.  The guys in Black Sabbath are older.

That is not a very advanced age!   :o

Meant it as more of a compliment - how Belew was playing tonight showed more energy - not to speak of skill - than many guitarists half his age.  Assuming I reach that age and even had half the talent, I certainly wouldn't have the energy.

String Cheese Incident @ Lincoln Theater Tuesday November 4th.  Crowd was REALLY into it - I believe both nights sold out.  They played hard for something like 3.5 hrs with a short break in between.  I was a bit "jam band-ed" out by the end, but that takes nothing away from the stunning performance and a surprisingly good light show. They managed to mix it up pretty well and not get too stale.  Better than the Phish concert I saw the year before. Though everyone stood, you did always have a seat to plunk down on and that was better than having stoners fall over you at an outdoor lawn concert.

Venue was good with decent booze selection and acoustics / sound mixing.  Though from the smell of the place, people seemed much more into other recreational substances.

I've seen them several times at Red Rocks outside of Denver. Always a great show and they always play a really long time. You definitely get your money's worth. BTW, Bill Nershi uses Daedalus pro cabinets for his amplified acoustic guitars.

Saw The Black Keys at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas on Nov. 8, 2014 with opening act Jake Bugg.  Unfortunately, we only had floor tickets and we were in the back, hence the poor quality phone pic.  Sound was still excellent though.

Saw Paula Cole bout a year ago in a club near my neck of the woods with a good sized band and she played w/o an intermission for an hour and a half.  Then, she did it again.  Seating was good.  Sound was good.  Audience was good and great music happened.

Sorry for the poor picture...

Show was at the Stranahan Theater in Toledo. Great venue!
First set was all acoustic... Joe B on 7 different guitars. 4 other band members, one on piano, another playing fiddle, fantastic guy on percussion and some guy from Sweden playing what looked like a long and narrow dulcimer using a real short bow. Very good player!
Was fantastic!

Second set all electric and so loud it hurt the ears... Great that Joe is such a great player but wow was it loud. Many left early because of it.
Maybe my age is showing...
