I am dipping my toes into headphones and noticed that Massdrop has drop for both @ 199.  Which one is might better or any other option available in the same price range.

I had AKG 701s and found them to be rather bass shy, no experience with the Sennheisers.

The K612Pro is the best in the family (in my opinion), but does want some amping behind it.

The HD598 is very similar to the HD6## family and significantly cheaper (especially with Black Friday and Christmas around the corner).

If I had to pick between the Senn or AKG, personally I would go towards the Senn for general purpose listening. If I wanted something more for gaming or mastering, then I'd go with the AKG.

The 7xx is based on the 712 Anniversary, with a little more 'bottom' than the 701, but the Senn probably has the better bass nonetheless.

The HD558 and 598 are the older models now that the 559 and 599 are out (there are a few other models in between). So there should be a good number of refurbs and final stock on sale... just keep an eye out on amazon or other big retailers.

I used (happily) a pair of Senn HD650s for a couple of years. When I got the itch to try something new, after a few trials, I ended with Beyerdynamic DT-990 premiums. They reveal so much more music to me and provide deeper, tighter bass. Must stress these are the premium version, NOT the pro version. In your price range and more comfortable as well.

What I hear is that the Senns are more resolving and take to mods very well. The K7XX I own myself and while they're good, I would probably prefer a good planar headphone in this price range (HE400I or the massdrop variant).

The Beyerdynamic headphones being mentioned I believe are from a rather 'bright' line of headphones, so be aware of that as they're not for everyone.

I've found myself most happy with Planars but not the Monoprice models (which have plenty of shortcomings but people hype for the bass response).

That's about right for them. I've seen them dip below for a day or two during special sales, but you have to pounce on those.

Not sure if Sennheiser 579 for 99 is a good deal or not, along with a good option to 598.

The 599 is much Much better than the 598. Ive heard both. The 599 is closer to the 650 in fidelity and imo exceeds it in some respects. I have not heard the 600 but from what I've read the 599 is a hybrid of the two.

I had DT-880s which I liked and didn't find them bright with a WooAudio 6 headphone amp.  Maybe it's just me?
I sold that combo off and went back to Stax.  Mine are the Sigmas which can be found in that Battle of the Flagships link.  Ugly as warts but I never heard anything I liked better.

Back on topic, I'd be more curious how the Beyerdynamics sound compared to the Sennheisers.
