VMPS Drivers For RMX Speaker
« on: 10 Apr 2017, 11:42 pm »
I am looking for a pair of drivers.  1 - 10" and 1 - 12" driver.  They were from MISCO in 2005.  If necessary to match the other speaker, I would need a second pair as well.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Is it possible to fix them?  No burn marks.  Just a rubbing sound.

Thanks!!

Ron

Hey Ron -

Private John Casler if he doesn't respond to you automatically. He is the expert on this. If you are hearing a rubbing - check the surround for rips, tears, leaks etc. Sometimes that decays and just needs replaced - happens to Dahlquists, old Advents, an old Velodyne of mine etc... If you hear a scraping (rubbing?) it may mean the voice coil is damaged.

Ron,

I replied to one of your earlier threads, about your RMX woofers.  I'm not sure if you saw it.  So, I'll repost it here.  I hope it helps!

Ron,

The VMPS woven carbon fiber drivers are proprietary and rare, and won't be easy to find.  Brian had the drivers custom manufactured, using his own stock of carbon fiber, at Misco.  So, these aren't off-the-shelf woofers.  But, the same or similar woofers were used in many different VMPS models, including subs.  Keep a look out for speakers for sale too.

Also, I posted about a pair of the 12" drivers for sale on eBay, in my For Sale thread.  I don't believe the woofers sold.  As such, you could contact the owner directly, to see if the woofers are still available?  Email the owner through eBay.  Here's the original eBay listing.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VMPS-12-034-Super-Woofer-Pair-Misco-OOC12W-4C-/152097938340?rmvSB=true&hash=item2369be5ba4%3Ag%3AAokAAOSwciVXP6Zb&afsrc=1&nma=true&si=jB01tMjKVZiCKpTH1t4VdjQ0k74%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Another possibility, is AC Member, Patrick Malaga.  Patrick purchased most of the left over VMPS inventory, after Brian passed.  The left overs included drivers too.  Patrick has a Craigs List ad running now, showing some drivers.

You can PM him too, through AC.

If I come up with anything else, I'll let you know.

Good luck.

Stimpy

Oh yea, here's the contact info for Misco.  Maybe they can recommend replacements.  After all, they should know; they made the woofers.

Thanks a lot for your help.  I've been in contact with Patrick a couple of times.  But now for some reason, I can't get in touch with him.

Thanks,

Ron

I went to the posting on eBay and had to back out.  Now, it's not there.  Very strange.  Anyway, I wonder if it's possible to repair the drivers.  It seems it may be the voice coil.  I can't see any visible damage.  Just when I press on the cone it sticks a little and has a rubbing or scraping sound.

Thanks again,

Ron

Parts-Express can repair speakers.  They maybe able to replace just the voice coil if damaged.

Would suggest contacting them directly.

Another possibility is Orange County Speaker repair.

Unfortunately, Orange County Speaker Repair is no more.  They sold the speaker side of their business, to concentrate on other interests.  As such, to me, the best speaker repair guy in the country, is probably Bill LeGall, at Millersound.  Bill is a true repair genius.  If Bill can't fix it, it can't be fixed.

http://www.millersound.net/

Give Bill a call.  He's easily accessible, and loves discussing speakers.

Some additional info on Bill.

Oh yea, the eBay link, about the 12" woofers still works for me.  Reboot and try it again.  Maybe clear your system cache too.  If needed, here's a link directly to the seller.

Again, good luck.

Oh, just in case, I emailed the eBay seller with the 12" VMPS woofers.  To see if they're still available?  I'll update here, as soon as I receive a reply.

Hey Invisilink!  You might be in luck.  I just heard back from the eBay seller.  His eBay ID is:  zxtremist

He just wrote me back and said the 12" woofers are still available.  Well, here's his response:

"I'm trying to figure out what I did with them. I believe they're in storage, as soon as I can locate them, I'll get back with you. thank you".

So, search eBay for his user name, get in touch, and definitely let him know you're interested in the woofers!!!

Good luck.    :thumb:
