The September meeting of the Houston Audio Society is at my house in the NW suburbs on Saturday, September 21st. The meeting topic is dipolar disorder, a personality disorder that affects a significant and growing number of audiophiles who have the delusional belief that sound is coming from the backside of their speakers. The purpose of the meeting is to increase awareness of this disorder and to influence the medical community to have it added to the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) so those of us who are afflicted will be eligible for healthcare insurance reimbursements for the therapy we all need.

The meeting starts at 11:00 AM. One of our members has promised to bring a cooler of handcrafted micro brew adult beverages, and we will order pizza at 11:30 for everybody who wants some. We will hear three DIY dipole speakers that cover three very different design philosophies and range in cost from less than $100/pr to big bucks. One pair is the just-completed active crossover DR912ad dipole line arrays, each standing 7' 9" tall, with nine BG NEO8 PDR tweeters and twelve Dayton Audio RS180 midwoofers plus at TC Sounds Epic 12 subwoofer. Another is a pair of high sensitivity full range single driver dipoles with H-frame subwoofers, pictured below. The third is the "Sweet 69's", built with twelve PE 69 cent buyout drivers plus a centrally positioned Vifa XT25 tweeter. No RSVP's are required and everybody is invited to join us. One of the more interesting speakers we'll hear is the Sweet 69's, an extreme budget dipole line array built from Parts Express 69 cent Sony boombox buyout drivers with a centrally positioned Vifa tweeter. The Sony buyout drivers sound every bit as good as you would expect a 69 cent driver to sound, and much better when you wire twelve of them together in an array. These have very limited bass response, so we'll be hearing them with an 8" Pioneer subwoofer. The cost to build these was about $100 (excluding the subwoofer).
