CAF 2017 Show Coverage
« on: 8 Nov 2017, 12:13 am »
I want to thank Art Dudley of Stereophile for a wonderful mention of our room at Capital Audio Fest. I was manning the headphone booth and it is unfortunate that he walked in when a product demo was going on, but I appreciate his words about the room!

He sounds like a tool.

I would have liked to see the demo, esp if it was with a DAC.  I would have liked to see a DiD too, that wasn't in the display case.

I do actually understand his point in general since the Stalk room was nothing but a demo for isolation devices and the speakers got lost in the noise.  But I went back to listen to the Apollos 4 times since they sounded so good.

I can't speak for Art and I won't. I am grateful for his kind words about our room and I agree that it looked and sounded beautiful.

The DiD's are a fantastic and effective isolation device! In addition to using them under virtually everything in our 2CH room, we also used them under the player, HA300 HP amp and UDP external supply at the HP booth.  I have heard the demo and it IS impressive.

It is unfortunate that Art dropped by right when he did, as I would have like for him to be able to hear music of his choosing.  He would have been even more impressed.

Thanks,

Dan

I'm sure we have been in the same room dozens of times but I've only spoken with Art briefly a couple of times. My impression was of a very intelligent, approachable and basically good guy.  As to what he wrote I truly respect the way he didn’t let his irritation influence his appreciation of the system. Most reviewers who are irritated tend to completely dis the room... he didn't and that is exemplary. :thumb:

For what it’s worth, I played that SRV because I had just picked up the 45 version and had heard it on our system at RMAF where it gave me a new appreciation of the tune, so I actually put that on for myself…. Usually I try to play more interesting music, stuff that I like such as Vieux Farka Toure, or St Paul and the Broken Bones. Great music but often people just want to hear the music they know, it is a dance and sometimes it just doesn’t work.
I’ll take his comments as a nudge to keep pushing new or underplayed music.

As to his comments on the DiD demo, I hope someday he takes another listen
thanks,
Lou Hinkley

Sandy and I really enjoyed our time in this room.  Lou was very accommodating.  Leonard Cohen was playing at the time which was just fine for us.  We did get the DiD demo but only after we asked for it.  It was not pushed on us in any way.  The DiDs were placed under the dac, removed, then placed back.  I thought the improvement was noticeable but subtle. I would have to hear them in my own system to be sure and Lou was certainly receptive to a return if one is not satisfied.  It was a point that he stressed more than once.

The electronics and the speakers seemed to be a great match and the Modwright stuff was absolutely gorgeous.

I saw Art's comments and my first reaction was "What a missed opportunity". Not because Art writes for Stereophile, but because his musical tastes, design aesthetic and evolution as an audiophile suggests he would completely "get" what Lou, Dan and Alex are doing and would have greatly enjoyed hearing music presented in this fashion. I actually wrote a letter to Art like 5 years ago trying to encourage him to check out Lou's speaker designs, but I never heard back. It was clear that despite his annoyance he saw and heard the magic. Hopefully that will cause him to explore further. I'm thinking the Ambrose and Apollo combination are right up his street. Too bad he didn't circle back for another listen later in the show.

I agree 100% and the timing could not have been more wrong.  Very unfortunate because I agree with you 100%.  As you can see, he DID like what he heard and two years ago was also very impressed with our very first tube amp that we showed again with Lou's speakers.

Putting aside Dudley's preferences, congratulations on the comments that matter. Also, Lou, thanks for mentioning in your post some music I haven't been familiar with; listened some online and ordering their cds.

Lou, I picked up St Paul & the Broken Bones - Half City while listening to it they seem reminiscent of The Commitments - really enjoy it.
