The confusing part of many of these types of discussions is they often mix dynamic compression and digital compression in the same conversation so the average person can get the idea that digital compression causes dynamic compression.

About 12 minutes in they are talking about digital compression and they give a demonstration of dynamic compression.  Unless some of the compression algorithms also compress the dynamic range.  Do any of the compression algorithms also compress the dynamic range?  I can see the mathematical advantage of doing it but did not know dynamic compression was part of the digital compression.

Furthermore, both forms of compression are only part of the substandard quality issues many recordings face. Poor mic choices and placement, over zealous EQ, extraordinarily complex signal routing, and sometimes just damn poor taste can wreck a recording long before it's squashed by a compressor or converted to mp3.
