2.5B3 or 3B3
« on: 19 Dec 2016, 09:32 pm »
Hello,

Has anyone heard the difference?
According to James on this forum more power is better.
But I believe the 2.5B3 has one pair transistor per side and
the 3B3 more per side? So, has the 2.5B3 an sonic advantage
for not having any more transistors parallel causing "smearing"?
Any opinions? Are both amps fully balanced?

I have loudspeaker 91 dB sensitive, impedance dipping to around 3 ohms in the
upper bass region.

I am upgrading/switching from a sst amp.

Regards,

Olaf

I was in the same position when upgrading from my 3BSST2 to the new cubed series.  With the efficiency of your speakers the 2.5 should be fine.

With Bryston there's no good, better, best.  Just buy the amount of power you need.

My old 150 watt 3BSST2 was tested at the factory producing 169 watts per channel.  The new 135 watt 2.5B3 that I got this past weekend made 163 watts per channel.  Basically, I'm more than please with the choice to go with the 2.5.  More than enough power; I also have a 2B-LP that never ran out of steam.

I have the 2.5 cubed.  I came from more power on paper but this amp is one sweet sounding unit.  I have Focal 1027be not a hard drive and easily play to 85-88 db with no strain.  If you went with the 2.5 feel satisfied and forget the 3 but if think that you'll think about the 3 then just do it right off the bat.  I don't anyone who compared the 2.5vs 3.

How would you compare the 3B2 to the 2B3 in terms of sound/sonics?  I have a trio of 3B2's and don't have the opportunity to audition locally.

I have not had an opportunity to spend much time with my new amp.  However, the new cubed series is a marked improvement over the SST2 in every way.  The lowered noise floor is unbelievable.  I highly doubt that you would be disappointed with a cube.

Hello

Thanks for your replies, at the end I ordered a 4B3  8),
Someday I will trade in my speakers and I don't want to have
lots of power for eventually new speakers.

Hi Olaf!

congrats for your choice! 4B3 it's surely a great choice.

I'm planning to buy one of the new cubed ampli, but since my budget isn't very high I am considering the 2.5B3.. if it can deliver more than 150watts per channel it could be a great solution and not a compromise

What do you guys think about it?

Cheers

Grant, mine came back at 162W a channel.  I have no regrets and had a more powerful amp before.

Grant,
It's not because the 2.5 is the smallest amp in the Bryston line it will be a compromise.
Bigger is not always better. Like we said in french "dans les petits pots les meilleurs onguents".

As posted earlier, I moved from a 3B SST2 to a 2.5B3.  It's way more power than I'll ever need based on listening habits and room size....even if I were using Magenpan's it would still be fine.  Based on my calculations, my amp spends a lot of time in class A and has probably never had more than a 10 watt load on it....max.

It's important to remember that with Bryston, there's no good...better...best.  I have zero need for a pair of 28B amps; however, I know that my little 2.5B is just as "good".  It's about how much power do you need; I simply don't need anything as big as a pair of 28Bs, or even a 4B for that matter.  The same is true with the preamps.  I don't see the BP6 as inferior to the BP26 that I own; it's a matter of paying for the features you want/need and no more while the quality remains the same.

I'm more than pleased with the 2.5B3 and if I were purchasing again today, my decision would not change in the slightest.

Thank you guys

As far as I've understood, the only difference between 2.5, 3.0 and 4 (cubed series) is the power. The "quality" is the same
