Deadheads, check this out!
« on: 28 Feb 2009, 05:35 pm »
Two shows are currently online as torrents. They are back to back performances recorded at the Fillmore East on February 13th & 14th, 1970.  If I understand correctly, these are the two shows in which Dick's Picks #4 drew from in compiling that cd.

The reason I bring this to your attention is because these shows are out-of-sight good.  The recording quality will blow you away.  If you are a Dead fan, these two recordings will absolutely knock your socks off.  This is obviously just my opinion, but I believe you will agree.

Thanks for the heads-up!   :thumb:

I have Dick's Picks Volume 4 (I actually have them all) and it is indeed killer!

The torrent you are listening to has more of the music vs. the three cd set that comes with Dick's Picks Volume 4.

Here is the write up from Allmusic.com who gave it 5 out of 5 stars and a highly recommended note:

Great stuff! I started a project this weekend of going through the 18 shows of acoustic material that I have from 1969-80. I'm taking a break from it for now. Thanks for the two additional sets.

Some most excellent shows there, bprice2!
I'm very much obliged!
I own DP4 and Bear's Choice, which I hear in there, but I've had a very good time listening to this recording.
Lots of life peaking music here.
A very good time, worthy of the download  or a trip in the 'Way-Back Machine'.  aa

Thanks and Regards!

I am using Foobar2000 to listen to the .flac files.
If you don't use your computer to stream music you can still use Foobar2000 to convert the files to .wav
After installing Foobar click File --> Open...
Navigate to the folder with the Greadful Dead download
Highlight all the .flac files and click Open
The first song will start playing - Click the Stop button
Right click on the highlighted files, choose Convert --> Convert To...
Pick .wav
After conversion you can burn the .wav files to an audio CD.

There are probably 100's of other programs that convert .flac to .wav and Google will find them all.

They can also be gotten from BT.Etree.org without signing up:

2/13/70
2/14/70

If you need to convert Flac files to Wav files in order to listen to the music, the free software can be downloaded from here.

Thanks, Len.  FLAC frontend is what I was going to suggest as well.

Doug, just convert the files to .wav and burn to CD (making sure you have the tracks in the right order) and you should be good to go.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying these shows.  I personally can't stop listening to them.  The St. Stephen -> Not Fade Away on the 2-13 just plain rocks.  I can't help but to crank it up to eleven.

The site I directed you all to is Working Man's Tracker, but there is another site I'd also like to point out called Lossless Legs.  Both are great sites for downloading GD shows, as well some other "Dead-ish" types of bands.

I wouldn't consider myself anywhere close to being a Dead Head (I never even got to see them), but I have, over the years, attempted to download some shows and never found anything I considered worth listening to more than once.  I just don't find many of the audience recordings all that good and sound boards are hit or miss.  Not to mention the shear volume of what's out there in cyber space is a bit daunting.  But, a couple of months ago I started taking another look and downloaded few shows that sounded quite good.  Then I started to notice what these "good" shows had in common.  They were all remastered by a guy named Charlie Miller.  So, I started grabbing all the Miller remasters and transfers I could find.  Almost across the board the Miller downloads were both great shows and had good to damn good sound quality.

Here's my suggestion, if you are interested in finding some more of these gems.  Peruse the two sites mentioned above and look for the word "miller" in the file name of the torrents...Mr. Miller puts his name in the files he uploads.  Also, look for buzz in the chat section of the various shows.  The guys at these two sites know there stuff and definitely comment when a superior upload hits the site.

I did what little research I could on Mr. Miller by utilizing Google and learned that he was an audience recorder who apparently got to know some folks like David Gans and Rob Eaton, who are able to get their hands on first gen sound board recordings from the "vault" (whatever that is).  So, Mr. Miller is able to remaster and transfer some the best of the best recordings of the band.  Mr. Miller's genius is in his connections, the best I can tell.

Hope y'all find this helpful.

Hey Brett,

Thanks for the info. From the shows that you've collected are they all flac or are some shn? Thanks again.

Some of them that I've collected were uploaded as .shn files.  I use dbpoweramp to convert the .shn files to .flac.  It can be used to make all kinds of file conversions.  I think that you must pay for the conversion feature of dbpoweramp.

Hey Brett!
Thanks for the info and the tips re: "Miller".  I didn't know that stuff.
From someone  who was having a time in their prime back in the early 70's, I've really enjoyed what you pointed us at, and renewed my interest in chasing a few more...

My best to ya!
