Any interest in a new tower?
« on: 25 Dec 2017, 07:37 pm »
I'm considering building a new tower using the VonOtto prototype concept, although with a narrower design. I'll use the Nimbus Raal, with the Audio Technologies mid, and a new high excursion 7" woof. Amazing bass from such a small driver, especially when I use 4 of them!

This shape, but in a slightly narrower taller tower design. There would be just a slight lean back angle, and I'd offer a Tranducer Labs dome tweet or a Raal.

Kinda reminds me of the Sonus Faber Venere... I know that the fabrication and drivers and all are different, but looks wise it's what I thought of. Not that that's a bad thing.

You're right...they do look like that. I like my top better.

2 different possible layouts, but with the same cab construction. The VonOtto is a definite proof of concept.

Two issues with any floor standing ported speaker:

1.)  What is the listener's seated height (to ear level)?  This is where you'd want the tweeter centered.

2.)  Locating the port at the end of the cabinet turns it into an acoustical tube (like a flute) versus a simple ported box.

2.)  Locating the port at the end of the cabinet turns it into an acoustical tube (like a flute) versus a simple ported box.

1.) as long as the angle from the tweeter to the listener's ear is within a few degrees of normal it will fall within design constraints.

2.) a vented enclosure of any type will have a primary resonance (Helmholtz).  When they get longer they will also exhibit a standing wave resonance that affects tuning to some degree and that is always factored into the design.

Has anyone heard of ViaWave? We're looking at their tweets to replace the Transducer Labs tweets in my builds.

Looks nice http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Viawave-GRT-145-4.htm

But may be hard to integrate, or expensive due to cap size.

Wow!  34mm!!!  That's a beefy tweeter with a big Xmax.

He tested with 82uF, but in actual implementation more modest values around 10-15uF will be likely.  I plan on using that one for my own build.
