Dumb - 2 toasted boards in 24 hour
« on: 22 Aug 2015, 03:28 pm »
After literally never reversing power polarity on any preamp board over 3+ years I've managed to do so and toast 2 boards in the past 24 hours.  :duh:
Next board version will have reverse polarity protection.
Meanwhile all you DIY folks - be careful, lest you experience the snap, crackle and pop of $200+ going down the drain.

Been there, done that, got the badge.

Latest was my Tek 577 semiconductor curve tracer.  Tantalum bead had gone short circuit somewhere - a common problem on Tek gear of that vintage, so I pulled the (pin header) connectors on the power supply, and quickly found the problem.  Fixed it.  I then plugged the connectors back into the power supply - but got one connector one pin out.  I reckon I fried pretty much every bit silicon in the darned thing.  When the magic smoke comes out, it is very difficult to get it back in again.

Wow, its in the air. I just changed to an Oxaide plug on my LPS and left a small dribble of solder off the hot pin. Sizzle!!

Fortunately only lost 2 resistors. PTL   :duh:

Careful people, mistakes do happen to the best of us.
