Rare Albums You Should Purchase On Sight, thread.
« on: 22 Sep 2016, 08:49 pm »
Hi guys, I thought this might be a wise thing to get going.

Please, please, post the album cover so we have a visual memory of what we're after. Also the number or identifying information is needed because it sucks to bring home junk or worse pay a premium for no reason. Please keep it somewhat tasteful, there's plenty of marginal records that we don't need to make a huff about, really don't need to. If it's for sale on Discogs for $10 and there's several copies, it's not that rare. Even many are not rare that sell for more, they're just too common even though they're valued.

I'm just learning about all the albums... been picking some up you can't grab just anywhere. I've got a few lately but surely passed a few up! I just don't know what I'm looking at.

PALESTRINA-MISSA BREVIS-CANDOMINO CHOIR-FG FGLP-1028

McCowen, Dorati, National Symphony Orchestra - Gerhard: The Plague

Nicholas McGegan/Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra - Handel: Water Musick

These are things that don't have reprints as far as I know, which you may encounter out in the world and not online.

1979 Lyrita SRCS 109

This is a wonderful album and a great recording.  Even most people who aren't partial to classical music, love this LP.

There's a whole series of Lyrita discs of that era that should be bought on sight!.  I was lucky enough to find 8 of them at one time some 30 years ago.  TAS list, if I recall.

Don't forget Jazz at the Pawnshop.  I stupidly let mine go....

Funny.

BTW the fellow who wrote this, which includes many rarities (many not, too), has been looking for a second copy of the Missa Brevis for 20 years...

While we are showing unobtanium lp's, be on the lookout for  LSC-2436, but only with 1s in the dead wax.  Mastered too hot for the cartridges of the day, it was remastered for the 2s and on pressings.  There is a 1s for sale on ebay right now... hurry with your $300 for a VG++

Thanks Scott, that's interesting to know! That sort of information can help one score instead of bleed a little ($300 is a lot of any single, old, LP album, even if you can easily afford it).

It appears that you picked your LP's based on Arturo Salvatore's divine list.  While I do not own those that you listed, I have several others from his lists, and I totally agree that the SQ is outstanding.

I've been looking at the list intently, and scored several locally. But I've learned about some not on there, too. Many I'm posting I don't own yet, but wish to. I'm as interested in the empirical hunt as the music in some ways, so I haven't made any online purchases yet... plus that could get crazy expensive if you let it.

Our own JimDGoulding turned me on to this one.  He's not as active here as he once was, and it's our loss.
This is a MFSL version of an EMI.
 Great sound.

There are a bunch of LP's that are considered very valuable due to the fact that they are very well recorded, but they are OOP and hard to impossible to find.

If you should be fortunate enough to stumble upon them at a Thrift store or Garage Sale: BUY THEM! Don't worry about anything except major scratches. If you don't like them, you can always sell them at any number of websites and come out ahead.

BUY on sight!

Holst - The Planets - Zubin Mehta - London Stereo CS6734

I bought this album new in 1971, two years before The Absolute Sound was founded (1973) and became one of Harry Pearsons top picks on his HP Super LP List.

A lot of 2-eye Columbia records are good, take a chance when you find them. Today I bought one: Al Kooper/Mike Bloomfield, The Live Adventures of. Haven't cleaned it yet.

Check this out:

When you go into a record store look at every copy of Led Zep II for RL in the dead wax. They are worth up to two hundred bucks and some store owners are not keyed into the value. Hey, it's worth trying.

... if you find on site on sight an "Eagles: Desperado" with
"NIMBUS ENGLAND" in the dead wax:

you 've won the jackpot ...  :

popsike

by the way, the later Lyritas were pressed by Nimbus too.
