Turntable
« on: 26 May 2015, 10:42 pm »
Hi guys
I finally jumped! Bought a Thorens 160mk2 turntable, and I am really excited! In Europe these TTs are pretty popular, not sure how they are considered in the US. It comes with a mission 774 tonearm and a cartridge I probably have to change pretty soon. Wanted to ask if anyone here is familiar with this tonearm, and have any kind of experience with it. More specific I would like to hear if anyone knows if it's possible to upgrade cabling. A diy job? And also, I have some questions about the oil I have to replace when I recieve the TT
Pretty soon, hopefully I will be able to get a top notch phono stage, I like decware..., and if so I figure my setup will be close to finalized. From needle to driver there will be a system with the close to the least possible amount of parts possible, and to me, less is more! No crossover, not a single circuit board, no unnecessary  extra bits and parts.

For expert advice on Thorens TD 160 turntables check out www.vinylnirvana.com and send Dave Archambault an email. Dave is one of the best in the business. Located in Exeter, NH. I am patiently waiting for my custom Thorens TD 160 Super reproduction I ordered the middle of April...

Hey Jorgen,

I just divested myself of my vinyl and turntable.  This is what I had:

Tough decision, but opted to focus on other equipment.  Since having all my music on a NAS with control from a tablet, I realized I wasn't going to put nearly the focus on vinyl as everything else.  I did keep about 40 collectible albums.  Some with autographs (Warren Zevon, Chick Corea, John Hammond, Jr) and other classic rock collectibles like first two or three albums from Hendrix, Joplin, Santana, etc., etc.  I'd like to make a display of covers - the art on many of them is stunning! (not to mention the nostalgia)

But, I had that table for 20+ years and loved it.  I did change out the RCA cables for SME's, but never messed with the tonearm cables.

I'm sure you will enjoy yours.  In a way, they are like the turntable version of single driver speakers.   :thumb:

Jorgen:

I'm a huge Thorens fan myself. I have a 124MK2 and a 125MK2. Fantastic machines with their identities.

I deal with Juerg Schopper in Switzerland. He is THE world specialist on this brand, and has purchased the inventory of parts that the German company that acquired Thorens had, knows everything about these, etc... He is a fantastic guy too. http://www.schopper.ch/

For those who appreciate a well organized Vinyl Record and/or CD collection Oat Foundry offers unique and well crafted laser cut dividers from 1/4" thick baltic birch.  http://www.etsy.com/shop/oatfoundry

(I felt this topic was most appropriate for posting this information, rather than starting a separate topic.)

If I had time in Manhattan to visit audio shops, the 2 I would visit would be Robert Lighton Audio in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, and Oswalds Mill in Brooklyn, just over the Bridge. Lighton is basically an Audio Note dealer, with a few proprietary products, Oswalds Mill is entirely proprietary and everything is exquisite. If I only had time for 1, it would be OMA without question.
