Hi, Lou.

Is it a trick of light, or are the bases of the Muses slightly bigger (from front to back) than the tops?

Michael

Hi, Lou.

Michael

No trick, the baffle does slant up a couple degrees, so yes the bottom is slightly deeper than the top. Many of the Daedalus models have this.
It works very well for a more realistic stage.
thanks,
lou
ps the front on the Muse and the Poseidon also has an angle in (about 8 degrees)

I emailed Lou a couple of weeks ago on the supposed Eton tweeter upgrade but he was tight lipped.  Appears he has let the cat out of the bag here.  Time to tell all Lou.

Well the cat's out of the bag isn't it? recently Eton informed me that they have discontinued the tweeter I use, yep it was a momentary freak out, but having survived half a dozen suppliers of drivers going out of business over the past couple decades I wasn't too worried. Turns out they have introduced a much improved version, and once I finally got the sample in and the XO parts adjusted I became excited. It really is a major improvement on what was already a great tweeter. The same natural tonality but with a more even response especially off axis, lower distortion and faster, much faster.  It is still a one inch soft dome but the mounting flange is much smaller because the magnet structure is neodymium, so we have had to work with our machinist to design and build adapter plates so that they can be retrofitted as upgrades and also for the offset tweeter models.
The upgrade cost for existing models is $150 per tweeter plus $400-$600 for the XO work, fitting and refinish etc.  (Doing this as an upgrade opens a can of worms with potentially a lot of labor involved. We will be fair but have to cover our basic shop costs here.)
Obviously all brand new models going forward will have this tweeter and on these demo sets I'm selling the tweeter upgrade price I listed is a great deal.

It is still a one inch soft dome but the mounting flange is much smaller because the magnet structure is neodymium, so we have had to work with our machinist to design and build adapter plates so that they can be retrofitted as upgrades and also for the offset tweeter models.

A little stressful but exciting news!  Very generous for you to go to lengths to make sure your customers really can be "customers for life" by developing a retrofit option for existing speakers.  I know I'm a bit off topic on what is already a kind of historic post/sale for Daedalus, but your post got me wondering:

If the mounting flange for the new tweeter is notably smaller than the old, have you have done any testing of the tweeter in its current, smaller mounting flange alone (without an adapter plate) with your existing models?  Although probably not revolutionary as much as evolutionary to matured speaker designs, getting tighter center-to-center spacing (in particular on the point-source models) or being able to revisit optimizing the baffle width/geometries (in the sculpted baffle models) for free could be a (another) happy consequence of moving on to the new tweeters?

All the best for your new year!

Lou,

Please move if you think this is derailing the thread, as it is not the intent.

However, what is the game plan for those of us who own Daedalus speakers, but haven't received the upgrade in the event of damage to the tweeter?

Do you have stock of the older tweeters for customers who may need it in the future, or will our only recourse be to ship the speakers back to be repaired?

Hope you are enjoying your holiday season!

Good question and one I have thought about. We will keep some stock so that we can take care of any damaged older tweeters. The Eton tweeters are incredibly well build and I only know of one that has ever failed.

The new tweeter needs the adapter plate in order to be retrofitted in older cabinets, the new tweeter is smaller than the opening for the old ones.
AS to placement, we will look at that but placing the dual tweeters closer together could potentially create phase cancellations as well as alter (for the worse) dispersion and imaging. The current placements have been carefully designed, so I doubt that a closer grouping would help in the dual systems, it may come into play though with the single tweeter systems?

Lou,

How much time would the retrofit require in the shop for my Apollos? For example, could I drop them off at your shop; tour the countryside/drink coffee/sleep for a couple hours before returning for them, or would this require 24 hours or 48 hours, etc?

Thanks,

Michael

would like to listen to the DEMO of Ulysses ,  are these V.2 ?what is the difference in SQ between the Poseidon & the Apollo ? they seem to be at the same price point ? :tempted: :tempted:

Michael--I strongly recommend a road trip to Ferndale to meet Lou and hear his speakers. You will enjoy his company and fall in love with the music his speakers make.

Happy New Year everyone!

Nope the Apollo 11 you heard did NOT have the new tweeters, this just happened! None of the Apollo systems this year had the new tweeters.  These feel like the final piece clicking into place! :D

Yes these Ulysses  are V.2!
The Poseidon is a taller larger sound stage with a larger sweetspot. The Apollo is more linear and room friendly.
Room and taste, would determine which model is the best choice. Both are great speakers with very similar SQ

Lou,

I am excited to hear the new tweeters.  I imagine you will need to re-design the crossovers to accommodate the new specs and likely even more efficient tweeter.

All current orders in production will have the new tweeters?

Perhaps the main reason I ended up choosing Ulysses over Poseidon or other Daedalus speakers is the tweeter height.  In my room, listening distance and chair height, the mid-point of the 2 Ulysses tweeters is almost exactly the same height as my ears.  If you have a bigger room, listen farther away and/or your ear height is higher than mine, one of the other models might work better.  Another thing to consider is bass response; I use a REL S3/SHO sub, without which (again, in my room and with my speaker placement) the Ulysses  lack the last little bit of bass "heft", which might not be as true with the 10" woofer systems

Good points.  Lots of factors to consider here for sure.  Speaker stands and baffle tilt also factor in and can provide flexibility.

I have found the Ulysses to work very well with plenty of distance between speaker and listener.  Currently I sit about 12' away and the soundstage is huge, speakers acoustically disappear and the 6 driver array meshed into a sonic singularity.  Interested to hear how you have yours set up.

We updated the wiring in this pair of Muse today and remembered that these have some very special caps etc in them, I was very impressed by how good these sound.
They are really sweet but I decided to drop the price so someone can get into the Daedalus line easily.

$4295 with full warranty

Good for him! I was fortunate to hear the Muse (maybe THESE Muse?) at CAF a few years back and they were absolutely stunning in Scott's room. These speakers give you a very good sense of what the Daedalus sound is all about and could easily be a "speaker for life" when paired with exceptional components. Congrats and enjoy!!

As the cherry aged on these the one panel darkened while the other did not, very odd and I am not sure if that was their placement in a home for a year where one received little light and the other a lot of light? If that is the case then if these are placed in a room with a lot of natural light the panels may end up closer in color? When in a system it is not a big deal but it does look odd when side by side.  We could look into routing out the panels and replacing them but that is a lot of work. The price on these does provide for doing that work....
Yes I will do that Duelund/Mundorf mod with out the install charge.
thanks,
lou

Rob,
I do have a very good Sub woofer Dr. Hsu VTF MK11 it is has 15 " powered woofer , but I really do not  care for a sub woofer in a two channel system unless need be.
my choice was between the Apollo or the Poseidon ( Apollo 11 would have been too big for my needs ) and for room environment and size Ulysses  V2 which Lou had and we listened to it for a while, and did A/B Demo would not have cut it
when we were Demoing A/B between Apollo 11 & Poseidon, Lou practically read my mind and said both are very close except i found the 11's to be slightly bright

@ MegaHz
thank you !
the units come in tomorrow Friday 9, will listen to them for 2 days and than write about my experience on A/C  Sunday  evening

just a few questions for Daedalus owners if they care to answer .
1. Placement , what is  the distance between the speakers room size 15 W , 34 feet L (listening area is 15W X20L x9 H I sit about 14 feet from the speakers ) open plan Kitchen Ceiling sloping from 15 feet in the kitchen area to 9 feet )
2. distance between the front wall and the Speakers
3. what sort or feet or out riggers , spikes are you using ? my new flooring is cherry hardwood over concrete , and I have to two maple Boos cutting boards under my magnipans ,
Room is untreated(WAF) but do have heavy  curtains and furniture placed strategically & carpet to defuse first reflection point , I own a 14 year old Radio shack SPL meter and use Audyssey software on my Marantz HT  receiver to check the room nodes  but leave everything above 200HZ alone.
HT system which consists of front passive LS 50's  is separate from my two channel listening .
4. Semi dedicated line with PS audio outlets.
Thank you all
Asghar

my choice was between the Apollo or the Poseidon ( Apollo 11 would have been too big for my needs ) and for room environment and size Ulysses  V2 which Lou had and we listened to it for a while, and did A/B Demo would not have cut it
when we were Demoing A/B between Apollo 11 & Poseidon, Lou practically read my mind and said both are very close except i found the 11's to be slightly bright

@ MegaHz
thank you !
the units come in tomorrow Friday 9, will listen to them for 2 days and than write about my experience on A/C  Sunday  evening

just a few questions for Daedalus owners if they care to answer .
Thank you all
Asghar

Congrats!!! You are going to love them for sure!

I have owned two pairs of Daedalus (Ulysses, then Argos due to a very troubled room) and have tried diferent set-ups with the Argos in both rooms.
Lou’s speakers like to be a bit farther apart than, say the Cardas placement method or similar.
9ft apart (center to center) give or take is their sweet zone. In my smaller room I’ve had as close as 8’ 6”  with no toe-in. But in the new larger 18x23 + openings and vaulted ceiling, I’ve had them as far as 9’10” with a fair amount of toe-in and now 9’3” with just a hair of toe-in—not including the angled front baffle.

It’s like in a good room, you can tailor Daedalus to a type of soundstage you like... I’ve got them where I can ad or subtract that lil 1/4” of toe-in and either have a more recessed and separated images soundstage OR a more forward big bubble ‘live hall’ staging. Literally down to this little toe-in tilt or not. Pretty cool.

Hopefully your vaulted ceiling raises as it goes away from the speakers. If not you may want to treat it.
And of course your distance from front wall is room/bass dependent. Mine are 63 & 1/2 inches out (from front baffle) and I sit 12 & 1/2 feet from each speaker... Boy do these things really shine in a big room!

Enjoy!

Jason

Most of the time FedEx get's it right but sometimes the packages come over a couple days. I'm sure it will be there monday this is not unusual or cause for any alarm.
still I'm sorry they are not both there so you could play with them all weekend!

Ashgar,

I’ll come clean. I’ve suffered speaker envy ever since you chose the Poseidon speakers. I sabotaged your delivery by plying the appropriate delivery men and women with copious amounts of Ardbeg Uigeadail which I found here in Corvallis. I’m sure that once the drivers have recovered their wits, your other speaker will appear.

Congratulations on your new speakers. I hope the missing one shows up soon.

I figured it was you who sabotaged my delivery , Pretty Please  with sugar on it have fedEx delivery the right speaker to my door , I can assure you are not missing anything ! Apollo's are GR8 speakers I think my wife would have loved  them !  Wig,  suggested I listen to the left speaker in  mono and move my chair closer to the speaker , Hmmm ! not a bad idea , I will ask my son to help me open it tomorrow and  try that out. :wine:
Thanks .

A_shah  Why not look at the upside this weekend.  You now have a GREAT center channel.

Don't laugh, there was a person that posted years ago that laid his Ulysses on their sides and really liked it.

And as I am Oregon just how south of the border are you?

I envy your purchase.  Just one more thing - what was your street address and when is a good time that you will not be there?  :icon_twisted: I am assuming you have them insured for theft.  Seriously though, at the last couple of RMAFs that I have attended, the Daedalus speakers have sounded rich and glorious.  I am sure you will enjoy them immensely.  Congratulations.

Wow. Fascinating article. I always wondered about placing floorstanders horizontally. The thought came to me several years ago when I hooked up my huge, DIY 4-foot center channel. I was playing music through a DVD player and it sounded fantastic. I'm sure there's lots of technical reasons why it's a bad idea, but I'd still like to hear horizontal floorstanders or dual massive center channels in my room. Glad that Daedalus was open to allowing such experimentation.

Don't think ! Lou would like to see his Poseidon on the side as it may scratch the beautiful black walnut hand selected wood .  Interesting article , thank you for sharing , it is "funny I do have  a pair of Kef LS 50 on the side as my front left & right firing speakers ( a separate energy  center channel speaker) set up in my home theater system

Good thinking ! I should have thought about this as they cost the price of a small car. I guess I will call my insurance agent on Monday
Thank you

Hey man, nice! Hope you enjoy them.

What are the LS50s doing under that TV? Are they hooked up?

Ashgar,

Nice speakers, man!
Nice preamp!
Nice floor!
 :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I'm still positioning my speakers....still trying to get the best soundstage. I'm trying out the SET setting on my amp tonight. It's a very different sound.

yes  they are hooked up they serve as two front speakers for my separate HT system powered by a run of the mill Marantz AV receiver, the two channel system is separate   ( their is also center channel speaker that you can see in the picture because of the black grill)
thank you.
