L5/6 kit too much treble
« on: 24 Mar 2024, 03:50 am »
Hi there,
I bought a Lampizator L5/6 kit DAC with WE and Telefunken tubes.  The treble is far higher output than other frequencies.  Any suggestions on how to balance this out without an equalizer?  Feeding it into a First Watt F5 amp and Elekit TU-8600S amp with same results.

Thanks,
Billy

What's an 'L5/6 kit dac'?  I'm only familiar with L5 or L6 dacs (quite different) and didn't think there were any kit dacs? Exactly what type and brand of tubes are in the output stage, and what type/brand of rectifier is in the power supply? And is there a plate on the back you can post a picture of?

Well, I've never seen one of these before.  :D  Perhaps the Lampi crew will chime in.

I can tell you the WE 396A is not a drop in replacement for 6DJ8 though I've heard of people doing that with an adapter, but they still aren't that similar. You might want want to try some standard 6DJ8/6922 to start, maybe Mullard, but anything you have to get going . Assuming the Telefunken are in the 12AU7 slot, those are going to be more clear and open on top compared to say a Mullard or Amperex 12AU7. Can't tell what rectifier is in there (GZ-34?), but there's probably a Mullard for that too!

That’s the Bendix 5852 rectifier. The WE tubes have an adapter base.
