Oppo UDP-205 and BDA-3
« on: 11 Nov 2017, 11:58 pm »
Can I use the Oppo UDP-205 as a CD transport by connecting the HDMI Out (Audio Only) on the Oppo UDP-205 to one of the HDMI inputs on the BDA-3?  Thanks.

You could also use other  digital outputs from Oppo to BDA3... HDMI is useful if you want to read sacd or blu Ray and let BDA covert. For CD all the outputs will work.

I've been considering a similar option myself. And has anyone compared how CDs played via HDMI sound via a coaxial connection?

Thanks, I had read that review. Larry Greenhill used a Bryston cd player hooked up to a BD-3D/A convertor via coaxial cable to listen to CDs. The Oppo player (one of three sources) had an HDMI cable for both CDs and SACDs. I am interested if anyone has used an Oppo player and compared sonics of HDMI vs coaxial while listening to CDs.

Hi,
I don't own an Oppo player so I cannot make any test.
Theoretically coax should be better as it has lower jitter than HDMI, but HDMI port on BDA3 seems quite performant so somebody could not mind the difference especially using a good cable

Does anyone now own both Oppo UDP-205 and BDA-3 and therefore able to comment on the relative sound quality ?

It would be a reasonable assumption to think a UDP-203+BDA-3 would surpass a UDP-205 alone, but the reviews I've read imply the latter's ability to act as a DAC (in part due to the pair of ESS Sabre Pros, which are very impressive on paper), including supporting USB input and multi-channel DSD, make it disruptive as a minimum and possibly a game changer...

Hello, I never tried but if go stereo I believe BDA3 will be easily better... if I'm not wrong also some reviewer also compared Oppo vs Oppo+BDA3 and stated the superiority of this latter

If you're interested in multichannel then a multichannel Dac may be a good choice as BDA3 is only stereo
