Title: Your Latest Music Purchase
Post by: Laundrew on 26 Oct 2017, 08:26 pm
It has been a real treat looking through the Bryston “Top 10 Playlist” thread in that it lets you experience “new to you” music. As a primary connoisseur of Gothic music, I also enjoy exploring music that is not in the realm of the Gothic genre – after all; my hobby is collecting music where my passion is listening to it.

Another great thread is “What Are You Currently Listening To,” which also showcases new music genres that may be overlooked or not known to some individuals – one post at a time.

An issue that I experience is that it often requires an extended period of time to post music in threads such as noted above after the initial purchase. Currently, I have a “buffer” storage area that my new music purchases reside in until they are enjoyed on my system - the buffer currently contains approximately 200 CDs waiting patiently to be enjoyed. My purchases often range from a solitary album, to at times, a dozen or so on a single order.

So here you have it, a thread for posting your newly purchased music, regardless of format, for other individuals to quickly explore and perhaps to enjoy.

Be well...

Same! I have around 20 gigs that has been sitting on my computer waiting to be transferred for the last 2 months. Usually, I'm much quicker but when I stopped and looked at Roon's display of total tracks in my library, I thought "why not take a moment to just listen."   :thumb:

I'm listening to Jamiroquai's 2017 album "Automaton" for the first time right now. Was listening to some Flume before that. I'm all over the place.

Post by: CanadianMaestro on 9 Feb 2018, 08:38 pm
At last. What took him so long to record these?

"Long renowned for his performances of this composer, Perahia’s brand new recording pairs together two of the most radically ground-breaking of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas, in a release that is sure to be a crown jewel of the Beethoven discography".

"Murray Perahia explored the “Hammerklavier” Sonata first when he was in his mid-twenties. While the work’s enormous technical and physical challenges fell within his grasp, its profound musical demands eluded him. He quietly dropped the “Hammerklavier” from his repertoire, recognising that he would need time to fathom its cosmic depths. Over four decades passed before he felt ready to programme the piece in recital".

"After years of studying the original manuscripts, working sketches and editions published during the composer’s lifetime, and having edited the new Henle Urtext edition of The Complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas, Perahia now presents two of Beethoven’s most famous sonatas as a revelation".

“The challenge of this music is still alive because one can get deeper and deeper into the piece’s mysteries. That’s endless – both musicologically and emotionally. Everything in it is connected. There isn’t a random note, yet it feels improvisatory. So it’s a mystery that will intrigue and occupy musicians forever.” – Murray Perahia

From Presto Classical, 9th February 2018:

"At just over forty minutes, it must be one of the swifter accounts [of the Hammerklavier] out there, and yet it never feels hurried or “too fast”, partly because of the clarity and conviction that Perahia brings, but also because of the care he takes over the ends of phrases...Perahia latches onto this idea of [the Moonlight] being more of a fantasy, and brings a wonderful freedom to his playing".

I wonder if he's going to do all 32.

I WISH. Doubt it.

It took Pollini decades to complete the "cycle".

Sony has a very nice box set of many sonatas, just not complete. To be frank, not all 32 are gems. imho, I would say, 15-25 are worth collecting repeatedly. Definitely #29 and 14 as recorded here. The adagio of #29....absolute heaven.    :thumb:

The recording quality is very good, but I thought the overall presentation was a bit relaxed.  I ordered the Alfred Brendel set on Decca so later on I can do a comparison between the two.  At $33 for 10 CDs it was difficult to say no to the purchase.

Pre-ordered a few weeks ago.  Supposed to ship on April 13th.  Such a great album.  I remember buying it on cassette in 6th grade.  My only qualm with is it still says “The $5.98 EP” yet it cost me $15.98.  I guess this whole inflation thing is real :)
