Tables for $100K and up
« on: 1 Oct 2014, 02:58 pm »
How many do you think there are?

When are you going to get rid of that old Rolls Royce and get a real turntable?

Maybe the Rolls still runs, but can it play a record?

Actually, in the mid/late 1960s, a number of Rolls Royce were fitted with Philips Automignon.

That looks nice...

I remember when these were considered one of the most expensive turntables in the world for about $25K. Of course they weren't called "black diamond" then. That makes all the difference.

Even if we correct for inflation some of the great classic tables might not make the list?

During the mid '80s I think the Goldmund Reference Anniversary was the most expensive at $50K.  It went up to $75K before it was discontinued around '90.

Thorens had a Reference sometime around '79 and the original Goldmund Reference was their response:

That's what I'm talking about. Got to hear this with the top of the line Lyrca cart on Magico's....holy cow is all I can say.  It was the perfect set up....I have the 1400 with MB Glider and love it for the cost.  I would say that Basis and Brinkman are two of my favorite tables right now.  I want to hear more of the VPI's, but Musical Surroundings also is up there.

The Goldmund Reference was introduced in 1985.
First price was $12000.
There is a full review in TAS 41 (spring 1986).
I can't remember an "Anniversary" model.

In this millennium Goldmund built The Reference II - but limited to 25 units:

Hi Toni,
I think the Reference from '85 was the Anniversary.  $12K, was that w/o arm?  Man, the price sure went up.   The original Reference was earlier.  Check out these ads:
http://app.audiogon.com/listings/goldmund-reference-turntable-collector-s-item-trade-ok

http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649065495-original_goldmund_reference_turntable_1982

I worked for a Goldmund dealer, but I only saw a Reference at Dan Fanny's house until we had a used one on the floor.   You might know of Dan from AHT ?  Seems that everyone at TAS loved his phono stage.  I'm very fond of mine.  I still have it.

Before the Reference II was released I saw an article saying it was to be $250K and came with 2 - SME V and a DAC.  Maybe it was a joke.  Price was $300K and if you could afford it, I guess the arm didn't matter.
I liked the older black version with the tachometer, but I wouldn't turn down one of the newer ones.

Hi neo,

In 1979 Michel Lévy of the French company Architecture & Physique Appliquee introduced a tangential
tone arm called Goldmund T3 with servo unit PL-5.

Later the company was sold.

In 1984 Michel Reverchon founded the company Goldmund SA in Meyrin, Canton Geneva, Switzerland.
The Goldmund Reference turntable shown was introduced in 1985:

price turntable: $12900
price T3B tone arm: $2800
at Christopher Hanson Ltd., LA

3 years later the price was much higher. I only have the German prices:

price turntable: 30000 DM
price T3F tone arm: 10800 DM
I think, this was the last development stage.

Best Regards Toni

Gee Toni,
Everybody says 1978.  Even at Goldmund site Reverchon says over 30 years.  That would be sometime before 1984 depending on when it was written.

I doubt if anyone around here cares.  I don't know what 30K '88 Deutschmarks is in dollars,  but it weighs a ton and had to be shipped.  Then there's the distributor with his cut = $50K US (arm incl).    :dunno:

Heard any good records lately?
Love,
neo

Thanks Toni,
Great interview by Roy Gregory here.  Reverchon talks about the physical and electrical properties necessary to make real sounding audio equipment.
On page 35 (magazine page) of the PDF it's about necessary bandwidth for accurate phase response.  Everybody does it to 200KHz for accurate phase, but if you want correct arrival time (amp) it's .2 to 2MHz.  Great stuff.

neo

Very nice! Might be time to design a turntable to accommodate that length of arm! :o
