What tubes to buy . .

to replace my 5 year old played everyday Matsushita 6922's in my Audio Research LS7 line stage?  Tell me a little bit about why you would recommend a particular tube, thanks.

I use 6922's in my DAC and phono stage.

I like the Ediswan 6922.  To me it is very straight forward in its presentation, revealing throughout your highs, mids, and lows, and not too warm for my tastes.

I have also used Tungsgram, Tele's, Mullards, Matsushita, and Raytheon.

Raytheon would be 2nd choice, although they can be difficult to find in quad sets.  They are straight forward as well, and will last a lifetime.

Good luck -

I would check out 7DJ8's.  They are high quality, tend to be less microphonic, and are more reasonable price wise.  They are a 7 volt filament 6DJ8, and  should work in most 6922 applications.

Hi Jim,

I've been reading about some very good Matsushita PCC88 tubes Upscale Audio has for sale.  They rate them very highly and sell for $30usd.

Cheers Rod

I would have suggested that as well, but not all devices can take the substitute.

I have a Cary DAC 100t and they did not recommend the sub.

But yes, they are a very good deal if the sub will work.

I have several different unused matched pair brands that may work for you. PM me if you are interested.

They are a lot like the Matshushita but little more dynamic I think.

Have spent some time swapping 6922, 6N1P-EV, and 6DJ8 in a low-watt Decware.

Compared to the other two, the 6922 has an annoying loss of detail, with sloppy LF response.

The 6DJ8 has the most overall detail and tightest LF response, but, you will give up some LF presence.

The 6N1P-EV seems to be a perfect compromise. As military surplus, there are plenty available, prices are quite good, and you shouldn't have a problem finding matched sets.

I loved the Amperex 6DJ8s that I had for a while with a Decware SE84CS.

I remember them being pretty pricey, though...if they weren't included with the amp when I bought it, I probably wouldn't have bought them myself.

This is a way to find some nice tubes for way less money.  Matsushita 7DJ8s $30.  I used them in my AH! CD player I had bought from Kevin a few years ago.

upscaleaudio.com. Kevin Deal is the owner.

Try 6N23s with the rocket ship logo.  Almost as good as CCa tubes ten times the price.

I have a Manley phono stage that uses 6922 / 6DJ8 / 7DJ8.

How can I tell if the 6N1P will be a suitable sub?  The 7DJ8 is slighter hotter, which leads me to believe the Chinook would not have an issue w/ the Russian tubes.

Thanks -

Jim you should try the 7308's that Kevin Deal sells. You can get a matched pair for around $200. Well worth the price.

I have purchased Kevin's Ediswan 6922 x 4, his Matsushitas 7DJ8 x 4, his Telefunken 7DJ8 x 4, the Tungsgram 6922 x 4, a quad of Mullard 6922's and a quad set of Raytheon 6922 from Flea Bay.

These Russian tubes are NOS, matched Reflektors, military grade, and $18 for the quad shipped to the US.

I'm on the hunt for quality Russian substitutes since myself and a friend have had really good luck on the power tube side.

Lots of NOS Russian tubes available since someone figured out they could market their military surplus to the hi fi community.

Five of the six gold grade Matsushita 7DJ8s I recently purchased from Upscale for my Herron VTSP-2A line stage were very noisy.

New production Telefunken Black Diamond E88CC/6922s from Tube Depot sound very good with almost no audible noise. They are actually JJ 6922s that have received long burn-in and tight screening. Most users report high fallout from the JJs (my experience as well). So far these "Telefunkens" are working well in my system.

I feel comfortable w/ the lot of tubes that I have for the Chinook.

I'm running tubes in my pre amp, tubes in my phono stage, tubes in my DAC, and tubes for the mono blocs feeding my tweer / mids on my speakers in a bi amp config.

Again, I'm trying to explore the world of these inexpensive Russian tubes.  Military spec means the build quality is fantastic and will meet or exceed the estimated 10k hour lifespan of a small signal tube (different vendors quote different hours so I am on the high side here).

Jim see if you can find Valvo 7308s. Do it before demand skyrockets the price. They have a touch of Mullard 2432 in the midband and a bit of Tele CCa in the bass.
