I recently found a 'new to me' band, Vas. Though leaning more to Eastern musical tradition, highly recommended to Loreena McKennitt and DCD/Lisa Gerrard fans. The singer, Azam Ali, also has a beautiful 'solo' effort out, "Portals to Grace", which is more Medieval Euro oriented.

Costco purchases
80's pop hits -3 disc for $9
Guns n Roses Greatest Hits - 1 disc $11
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell Quite good, kinda modern chick punk with an avangarde indie feel.
Electric Six - Fire This is the coolest rock electronica/dance music! Way different but it'll get you moving.
Guster - Keep it Together A friend of mine is good friends with a band member so I picked it up. A little too main stream, middle of the road rock music. Having said that they do have some country feel with a twang instrument, think it might be a bango.

Just got the XRCD of Tchaikovsky's Violin Cincerto in D - played by Jascha Heifetz with Fritz Reiner conducting the the Chicago Symphony. Recorded in 1957 basically at the dawn of stereo recording. This is a landmark performance; the only other I have heard that I enjoyed as much was Kyung Wha Chung's performance at one of the Tchaikovsky competitions (can't remember which). I first got this on vinyl back in the 70s and bought the XRCD more for the fact that it has been the only decent CD of this recording ...
Beebop, where do you buy your XRCDs?
just bought blind melon 24bit remaster on ebay-6.99'Tis the season for melon, but how's your garlic do'in.....really. :?
New one, can't think of the name.
Listened Saturday, sounds great.
They have a way of deconstructing a song into parts so that you hear each of the pieces very distinctly, and Margo's voice holds it all together.
Bought at Borders with bonus disc including their versions of Thunder Road (BS), Darkness Darkness (JCY), Helpless (NY). Worth the price of the CD alone.

The Bad Plus (http://www.thebadplus.com) - "These are the Vistas" and "Give"Both excellent cds...check out track # 2 on "Vistas"...a NY Audio Rave fav track for checking the bass !!!! Great stuff !!!! :)
I saw a writeup of this piano-bass-drum jazz trio in Stereophile or TAS (I forget which), and I decided to check out what all the fuss was about. When I saw both of these CDs at the used CD store, I picked them both up.
I am impressed. The writing and playing are fantastic. In general, I shy away from "modern jazz" because it gets too close to Philip Glass territory, and it usually takes me many listening sessions ...
The Peter Malick Group featuring Norah Jones/ New York City
A little more upbeat than Norah's regular jazz sound. very good stuff.

Oh, not at all, though I do listen to about 70% rock. I just don't fool around wasting my time on audiophile schlock or crappy ass jazz that seems to proliferate among the high end audio set! I was force fed classical as a youth and it grew on me later. I've got a modest classical collection- maybe 200 LP's/CD's. Perhaps about the same for jazz- though you won't find one F***** Diana Krall LP in my collection, but I do have Norah Jones first one on LP :oops:Expect the percentage to decrease as the years go by.... hey, it happens.... ....but there's alot of good music out there, just have to look and listen.... 8)

I thought I was the only one on AC old enough to know the music of Martin Denny. Most of his LP's were recorded in the mid to late fifties. I have one LP and one CD..The Best of Martin Denny. His Quiet Village cut is the most famous and was close to the top of the charts.
I didn't start listening to this stuff until the mid 90's, but love it dearly. Besides the oldies (Denny, Esquiviel, Lyman, Scott) there are some good new groups like Pink Martini, Typsy, Combustible Edison and Don Tiki.

Here's my latest purchases... This is by far the most CD's I've ever bought at one time (well almost one time, the recently purchased part is actually 2 groups of purchases). I only have about 200'ish CD's total so compared to many, I'm just an amateur! I also know that a lot of this stuff is older, but in many cases it's new to me. :)

Chris,
I really like a couple of your selections:
Roland Kirk - "Kirk In Copenhagen"
Ramsey Lewis - "Finest Hour"
Both of these are pretty heavy in my rotation these days (both at home in the big rig and in the office via my iPod).
If you don't already have them, these are also darn good:
Roland Kirk - "Domino"
Ramsey Lewis Trio - "time flies" and "The In Crowd"

You guys must be youngsters if you are just now discovering Ramsey Lewis "The In Crowd". This was popular on Verve in the mid 60's when I lived in the N Jersey area.[/list:u]

I can't stop listening to the 69 Filmore compilation. That has been my favorite year for some time now. Dirty, nasty and raw in contrast to the popular 1977 stuff.

Duke Ellington - Masterpieces by Ellington
Picked up these four yesterday:
Derek Trucks Band - Songlines - A great cd. Trucks is simply a monster guitar player who has surrounded himself with great players and this is his best effort yet, IMO.
I saw the Allman Brothers at the Beacon just this past Sunday, and I gotta say that I came away quite impressed with Derek's guitar playing skills.
The Allmans were a big favorite of mine back in their early'70s heyday when I was in high school, but that sort of high energy searing guitar virtuoso type playing is no longer my favorite. I guess I'm mellowing out to more melodic type stuff as I age, as I don't really listen to it at home anymore. But I do enjoy the raw energy in a live setting, and he is certainly a master.
When I listened to his solo stuff with the DT Band, I was quite surprised and impressed. It is quite different from the raucous boogie of the Allmans, and very mature beyond his years. Also surprising to me is that he plays without a pick....at least he didn't use one at the show. Must be real tough (and rough) on the fingers!
Wonder how his wife feels about that.

Marvin Gaye's "Vulnerable"
Do yourself a favor, I mean really do yourself a favor.
Get this album, get the wine, dim the lights and by the time it's finished (30 mins) you'll be headed for a special night, I promise, and she'll think you've still got some romance in those old bones.
I had owned this before but gave it too a friend in need.
I have NEVER met a woman who could resist some Marvin Gaye.
If yours can, divorce her while there's still time because there's a whole world you're missing out on :thumb:
You seem to be a man of good taste and you can't go wrong with Marvin.

Picked up a few bargin discs, mostly electro.
1. V.I.P Lounge 2 ~paris~ Disc 1 is termed 'Electro'. Disc2 'world music'
2. This is Chill out. A 3disc set of DJ remixes.
3. Total EUPHORIA mixed by Dave Pearce. 2Disc set.
4. Jazz records presents 'The Late Lounge'. 2Disc of sophisticated chill.
5. Electric Stew The Album. THis is a wierd looking CD set, totally black cover and linear insert with black lettering, even the dics itself does not have a 'label' per se, it looks like a double sided blank disc.
6. Grace Jones 'the collection'. Been a big fan of hers since way back in the last century. Nipple to the bottle, La vie en Rose, Feel up...classic GJ.
7. The story Of Vee-Jay, America's Premier Black Music Label. A 2disc collection of some of their greatest hits spanning the 50's, 60's and 70's.
All of the above were priced under $10. each

My wife really likes the (r&b/pop) sound of her CD.
Its pretty good for checking out bands that you've wanted to check out but never have and trading out stuff you picked up on a whim and didn't care for.
WGH, all- How do you get wind of record swap meets in a fellow's local area? Do you google something? Thank you.Jim....you might check out "Goldmine" at your local news stand or subscribe. They list record shows around the country.
Stopped in at Best Buy to pick up the new Rolling Stones release.....music from the soundtrack "Shine a Light: Original Soundtrack" [DELUXE EDITION] .
Right next to it was a double LP release.....a Best Buy exclusive....for $11.99.. 8)

Otis Redding - The Very Best of Otis Redding // Hard to argue here. Not all songs are great but there are some gems.
Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs // Excellent!
Mark Kozelek - What's Next to the Moon // haven't listened yet
Niyaz - Nine Heavens // excellent but then I've heard this prior.
Portis Head - Third // wasn't impressed thus far.
Kings of Leon - Only by the Night // really impressed. I had written off KOL thinking the singer sucked, this doesn't get on my nerves and the music writing is excellent
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast // Really liked it
Ryan Adam - Cardinology // sounded pretty decent what I finished hearing.
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion // don't get this one on first listen, but then I didn't get into Strawberry Jam on first listen either
M. Ward - Hold Time // a let down...sounds like a rip off of his other albums...to much of the same sound, bored me.

To appreciate "Third", listen to a lot of Alban Berg, Ligetti, and Bartok.
"Third" gets more interesting upon further listening.
This was a record from 1963 that you could get from your local Phillips 66 gas station, from a time when gas stations wanted your business so bad that they would give you free gifts if you patronized them! Learn through Stan "The Man" Musial (and co-host Joe Garagiola) techniques on how to improve your batting skills. This record also came with a booklet that further illustrated these techniques, and I have included that in a separate download if you're interested in it. It hasn't improved my batting in Wii Sports Baseball, but maybe it'll work for you in a more practical setting! Hope you like it!
I can't be the only one buying music lately. I was expecting this thread to

This OOP Mosaic Boxed set just arrived today...

This was a major acquisition for me. I have been trying to get this one for a couple
of years. Up until recently they have been very difficult to find...but in December
three of them went up for auction on eBay. Maybe it's the tough economy...

I bought one of these from Mosaic right before it went out of print. I held onto it for about a year and then sold it. I never opened it or listened to the discs. They have gone for a lot when they show up.
I purchased the catalog of Andreas Vollenwieder. This includes Midnight clear (holiday) and magic harp (best of.) His music is eclectic and great. I also like the quality of the sonics.

At that pace it won't take you very long 8)
That pace is slowing down. I used up my birthday money. It should take some time to listen to them all. :)
Did you get those 300+ CDs from the local good will store? I frequently check out my local good will places and am lucky to get 3 or 4 at a time. Of course, a lot of other people are checking out the same places frequently. At a buck or two for each CD, there are a lot of opportunists including me.
How would you rate the disc quality of the lots you've been buying? I have REALLY bad OCD and freak-out when I order discs that are advertised as "like new" and they arrive with even minor/faint scratches or small problems with the cover art. Do you find the lots to be in generally good condition? By that I mean - when advertised as "like new" do they arrive (mostly) matching that description? Every disc in my collection looks like it was just removed from the shrink-wrap and I would end up having to replace anything that wasn't. These days I only order stuff from Amazon and eBay when it's from a trusted seller, or someone who guarantees the quality. That's a lot of questions, but generally just wanting to know how your luck has been buying them.
Thanks,
Slush
I never even considered they were going straight onto a hard drive. As long as they're playable it really doesn't matter what condition they're in, and it's a lot cheaper than buying digital downloads from Amazon or iTunes. Had I taken that route I would have saved a ton of money over the years. Let me know how that next lot turns out.
Thanks,
Dave
Lords of Acid "Lust" isn't for everybody, but I used to play the crap out of it back when it came out. My wife hated it 8)

WC........Thanks for the reply. I thought it might be like that so that's why i didn't pick it up.Note that a guy i worked with picked up Song X as his first Metheny disc(big mistake) he wound up giving it to me. I just could not get into it at all and flogged it.Then i made the mistake of getting Zero Tolerance for Silence(another mistake)flogged that one too.Not to say you shouldn't pick up any of his stuff because most of it is very good. So if you don't like Sign of 4 don't bother getting those two.If you like i'll give you a list of some of his better one's that i like. Thanks again.
P'man, let me know what you think of Sinatra's Only The Lonely. The song selection and arrangements are wonderful, imho, and the sound is fine, too. Rickie Lee Jones is a winner, also,

amazon is now selling these classic album bundles (Original Album Series - usually 5 albums and Original Album Classics - usually 3) for a good price.
I bought early F Mac. Then Play On and Kiln House, the music is a bit all over the place, interesting but mostly good. I prefer the other three.

Pretty good recording of a band that was outstanding to see live. 2 CDs
OoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHhhhhh!!!
(ad nauseum).
I have to get this. Love that John Cipollina tremolo. There use to be a 2lp boot of the Filmore stuff, "maiden of the Cancer Moon" which was pretty good but the sq was poor and beggars can't be choosers. When QMS stuck to the raga/pysch rock they were great and Cipollina was great but the blues stuff, not so much. Thanks AD!
I'll have to pick that one up, was just listening to their first studio album!!
One of my favorites from back in the day. Saw them a few times at the Fillmore West but not until '69
Anybody have this Quicksilver Box? Sound?

This isn't a recent purchase but I thouught I'd add to the above discussion. I have this 2disc retrospective and the selection and sq is very good. Anyone looking for a QMS refresher or introduction would be well served here. Cipollina's guitar sounds great on this set and perhaps deliberately mixed to sound 'upfront' at least more so than I remember from the original recordings.
