Sorry the out out topic, as an contribution to the topic I will post this transformer vol pot link. Before I found Khozmo I was considering this German $200 a pair Autoformer Volume Control (AVC) his most basic model, add more the Teflon control for $20 each:

Pictured above is our first off the shelf device. It is intended as a high bang for the buck entry into the magnetic volume control arena. It allows attenuation from 0dB to -42db in -3dB steps. It has an 80% nickel core, all brass hardware and sounds every bit as good as our custom units. For more information please check out the FAQ, Wiring Directions and visit the Forum.

Hi...my builds address the issues mentioned. Components mounted on Delrin and suspended by nylon posts, signal-carrying wires and transformer cores are distanced from the metal... For my next build, even connectors are mounted to Delrin to avoid being positioned near metal sheet. I may even go so far as to use a 300 series austenitic stainless steel (low magnetism) for my next build.

Sometimes builders use near the components to the chassis metal to sink noise, this steel seems expensive, any reason to not use aluminium?
