Title: Lone Star Audio Fest 2010----Dallas, TX
Post by: Blooze on 2 Feb 2010, 04:24 pm
The dates for this years LSAF are May 14-16. Rooms are $99 per night and the reservation code is LSA. To get the rate you will need to book by April 30th.

To book a room please goto this website:
http://embassysuites.hilton.com/en/es/groups/personalized/DALTXES-LSA-20100512/index.jhtml (http://embassysuites.hilton.com/en/es/groups/personalized/DALTXES-LSA-20100512/index.jhtml)

or call 1-800-Embassy.

The direct phone number to the hotel is: 972-234-3300
and they can connect you to the Embassy reservation center.

Here is a link to the LSAF website: http://www.lonestaraudiofest.com/ (http://www.lonestaraudiofest.com/)

The webmaster has not got the current exhibitors listed (they are last years), as I've just recently set the dates. So if you would like to exhibit please contact me and I will have you added to the list. Please don't feel like you have to be in the audio business to set up. We have a handful of DIY'ers that bring their outstanding systems for us to enjoy every year.

Admission for the public is free.  There is no charge for exhibiting other than the cost of your suite.

If you have any questions you can contact me at : lonestaraudiofest _at_yahoo_dot_com and I or one of the others in the steering committee will try our best to answer them for you.

Hope to see you all there this year!!!!

This is a great opportunity for any audio equipment manufacturer or seller, and that's especially true for the smaller manufacturer who doesn't have the resources to cover the $ thousands it costs to exhibit at a major audio show. There's no exhibitor fee, and since the accommodations are two-room suites, you can exhibit in the front room and still sleep in the attached bedroom. So your total cost is only the $99/nite plus meals and travel expenses. Also, the scale of this show is much smaller, and you'll typically have one to three visitors in your room at the same time. This means a serious customer can audition your product in a quiet environment.  :thumb:

I have attended most of the Lone Star Audio Fest events, and will attend this one.  I think it's a great opportunity, especially given the unheard-of reasonable price for the show.

I would very heartily recommend Lone Star to any manufacturer who isn't up for spending the big bucks for Rocky Mountain or Stereophile or CES/THE Show.  You get internet buzz for your products, and you can link to that buzz when you have e-mail conversations with people. You have a reasonable chance of making a sale - and actually making money that weekend (you'd have to make a much bigger sale to break even at one of the other shows).  And you will make friends and business contacts, including contacts with members of the audio press (who will have enough time to actually sit down and listen to your stuff and get to know you).  That can lead to a review.

My wife and I do the show together, usually sharing the room with NTV Amplifiers.  Here are links to some eye candy from the 2008 show (we missed 2009):

http://positive-feedback.com/Issue37/lonestar_08.htm

http://www.dagogo.com/View-Article.asp?hArticle=534

Now the BEST PART about the Lone Star show is... you DON'T HAVE TO BE A  MANUFACTURER TO HAVE A DEMO ROOM!  The price and policies make it totally accessible to anyone out there in DIY land who would like to showcase his or her handiwork.  And, for anyone contemplating crossing over to the Dark Side and becoming a manufacturer, here's your chance to put your stuff up against the pros and maybe raise a few eyebrows... and perhaps transition from hobbyist to part-time manufacturer.  Or just enjoy and promote your hobby (speakerbuilding, ampbuilding, vinyl, whatever) for the price of a hotel room.

AC member who are interested in the Lone Star Audio Fest are asked to participate in a poll I posted in the "Circle Proposals" circle. This is part of a revamp of the "Shows and Events" circle. In its new form the Shows and Events circle will include sub-headings for each separate event (LSAF, RMAF, etc.), and I have volunteered to moderate a new LSAF circle.

So if you're interested in the Lone Star Audio Fest please go to this thread and vote: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=77260.0

As I've indicated on the thread Fred linked, Audio Note will be exhibiting at Lone Star once again this year.

I expect to bring the new Jinro integrated amp - nearly 100bs of amp using 211 output tubes (20 w/ch) and interstage transformers - a copper analogue to the ONGAKU at less than 1/4 the price:

An M3 Phono pre-amp will enable us to play vinyl, although I'm not sure what 'table I'll be using. Also uncertain is which digital front end I'll bring. It will all be working its way to a pair of Audio Note E/Lexus Signature speakers.

I'll be there with a room featuring several icy cold texas-brewed beers, probably a combination of Shiner and Houston's own St Arnold. Ooooh, wait a minute, is this an audio meet? Ok, I'll have some kind of diy audio setup too.

I'm waiting for the official LSAF circle to discuss the equipment I'll bring. There are several speaker possibilities. I do know I won't bring the $80 Best Buy Insigina receiver that Phillip Holmes praised so highly in his Dagogo review of last year's LSAF.

If anyone who is exhibiting has a logo they would like added to the LSAF website (linking to your site as well), please let me know and I can arrange to have it added.  Also, if you know what gear you might be bringing and have pics, or if you don't but have some cool pics of some of your other equipment, let me know and I'll have those added to the website as well.

Ok Folks, we've got lots of people saying they're coming, but as of today there are only 3 rooms booked for Friday and 3 for Saturday (Tom Richards, John Busch, and Kim Beumer--thanks for booking early!!!) .  Make sure you use the code for the LSAF when you book to get the discounted rate and put you in the block they've set aside for us.  It also lets me monitor how many rooms we have and who's booked a room.

I'll have some kits for guys who are interested with instuctions on to how to trim to size.  The pads in the kits will have pre-cut openings and a means of attaching.  And I'll have a festival price.

Question for my friends and neighbors.  I don't want to set up a table in my room.  Think I could get awfully lonely in there.  Like to set up a table where the action is.  Just me and some kits and maybe a poster board on an easel.  That's all the space I need.  Guys don't need to demo my thing till they get home cause I offer with a money back guarantee.  And that's the way I want it, too.  Can I be in one of you big boys room?  Promise not to knock anything over.  Maybe out in the hall where you fellas are is better, hotel permitting.  Please gimme your thoughts here or in a PM.  Thanks.

Jim, if you are going to be there and rent a room to stay in then you might as well bring whatever you want so you can show off your product. The cost is negligible.

Just a modest system that will allow people to hear your speakers with and without your treatment might be pretty cool.

Thanks for the suggestion, Danny, but I just want to display kits and an easel, I'm thinkin, and talk to interested people and hope they will take a set home.  I'll make them attractively priced and they can trim to size as may be needed (they'll be 1/4" in thickness and top shelf wool) and listen more in depth at their leisure.  I will include instructions and my means of attaching.  So, I'm lookin to hang where the action is but will not be a distraction.

Clark- Good morning.  Permit me to send to you my latest version cut specifically as best I can to the speakers you have in mind to test and measure.  I will need to know the following . . what is the precise distance from the centerpoint of the tweeter to a)the sides of the cabinet, b)the top of the cabinet, c)the edge of the mounting basket of the driver below and/or above.  If the cabinet has canted or rounded away edges then just up to where that begins.

I thought better of sending you this request in a PM.  May as well let interested parties here see how this is done.  Questions?  Thanks.

Jim,
It will be another couple of weeks before I know what box dimensions that kids have come up with.  They got their woofer TS parameters about three weeks ago, and got the tweeters last week.  Boxes are due the first week of April.  But I have no idea which project will be chosen as this years winner until the first week of May.  Can we cut and apply the felt at the Lone Star Audio Fest?  I can bring my Clio unit and we can take the measurements there.
However, we can use last year's winner.  I can get you the dimensions for it in a day or two.

Thanks, Scott.  I'd love it if we could use this year's champ. I would prefer to cut them in advance in my usual manner.  I'd need one weekday's notice.  Think you can give me that?  How do you propose to measure them and how much time will you need?  If push comes to shove, I can make and ship for last year's model with the measurements.

I take it the Clio is a measuring instrument?  So you would measure onsite in real time?  I'm game if that is the plan and appreciate it.  In the frequency and time domains?  Thanks, Scott.

Wow, I thought I had booked a room, but had forgotten - but we're all set now. I'm going to bring some "garage sale" equipment and, if I can get myself in gear, some of my own stuff for sale/demo. But, I could really use a pair of speakers for the room. So, if anyone has a spare set, let me know. I don't want to rent a truck to make the trip, and that's what my speakers would take!
Of the used equip, some that come to mind is:
Harmond Kardon tube tuner
Scott 222 amp
AR XA turntable with original headshell that isn't broken!
Thorens TD 125 w/SME 3009 arm
Several 80's SS pieces

Of my own stuff I'm aiming to have a phono stage ready and possible a couple power amps, at least prototypes to demo.
Should be loads of fun!

Yes, the Clio is one of the better professional measuring systems.  Ours is an older version, but it still does the job.  It's a bit of a pain to set up, so I'll set up the room for listening first, and measuring second.  I should have it ready to go an hour or so after we can get into the room.  As far as frequency, we can measure down to 10 Hz but loose accuracy below 200.  We can adjust the time increment to whatever works, usually 3 to 4 ms.

Several kids are using them in various combinations.  The crossover work really starts up next week so we will see how they come together.  I know that one group is using 8 of them- so there are a lot of combinations that they could come up with, 2 way, three way, 2.5, etc.  Success or failure is usually in attention to the little things.   Hopefully, I'll have measurements before the week is out.

I know where you bro's will be eating one night of the event but on another nite I suggest that you pile into a car and head to the Stockyards area in Fort Worth and hang at Joe T. Garcia's.  Been there since the 40's in a clapboard house but with newer rooms added and serving the same "dinner" all along.  That's what you want, don't worry.  Warning- the margarita's are stout (forget the frozen variety) and made with quality ingredients.  Muy delicioso.

It will be good to meet all of you and listen to your respective rigs.  I wish I was going to be there Friday, but funds at this point are short, so I most likely won't be there till Sat. around noon or so.

On the flip side, is anyone that is not a vendor bringing any used gear to sell (we talked about a swap meet room for the last LSAF but it didn't materialize)?  I don't mean to step on any of the vendors toes here, but I've got an AbraxasAudio amp I'd like to part with and would prefer to do it in person and not have to ship it.

I have family in from out of town, so will be staying home this year.

Will make plans for next year so I can come.

Really going to miss seeing the student project that Scott is bringing.  Hope someone takes lots of pictures.

At least there is an open room at the Embassy Suites if someone needs one.

Rich, I'll takes lots of pictures, hopefully someone else will take some good ones, too.  Gonna miss seeing you.  I was going to bring the schematic for the Valve Jr.  Now I'll have to finish it and email it to you.  Lots to do here........................

Take care, my friend.

I have family in from out of town, so will be staying home this year.

Will make plans for next year so I can come.

I'm sorry that you can't make it, but family always comes first.  I'll take lots of photos and post them.  I am really eager to hear how these top projects stack up against the other DIY'ers and even the pros that are going to display.
