My first real Planars were the Acoustat 1 + 1s mated to the Original VMPS subwoofers.  From there were the Infinity RS1bs.  At that same time I had the original Martin Logan CLS which I mated to the Infinity bass towers to create my own Mini Statement system:

The system I found to replace my Infinities came from VMPS.  It is the RMV60 mated to Brian's crowning achievement in bass expression, the VLA (for very large array).  I call it the VMPS Reference System, since it has similarities to the Infinity IRS.  Here it is as I had first set the system up:

These photos here show it's present state with the new room treatments.  This is about to change in the not too distant future though as I am increasing the size of my listening room.

How do you think those old Martin Logans would do mated with two Magnepan DMWs and a sub?
I've been thinking about those speakers for years but never got any further than that.

I'm sorry but once you start adding BOXES to the system they are no longer planars at least to me, boxes with boxes and panels with panels BUT if some of you like hybrids i guess it's your right to, live and let live

I was impressed with what I heard when first shown in Las Vegas.  However, they are more for mid-bass reinforcement than helping with the low range.  I guess it all depends upon what you would like to reinforce.

I just noticed that you mentioned "and a sub".  Since the mid-bass on the ML did need some uplift I can see where you are coming from here.  Then, to add a cone sub might just do the trick if crossed over at the right place.  I had made the mistake of not getting that mid-bass filled in properly and then was crossed over to the Infinity columns a bit too high.

No need to be sorry.  I am just not a planar fundamentalist myself.  I guess I am more of a foundationalist :).  I can and have appreciated the benefits of the pure design, but there are more times when I notice something foundational lacking.  If I never heard, or felt that difference then I might be perfectly happy without.  But, once there and done right (this is important) I couldn't imagine not having the best of both worlds.

Mr. Acoustat's photos always cheer my up!
Nothing succeeds like excess when it comes to our "little radios".
I'm sure the married men here can relate to that phrase.

I do still wish I had my Acoustat 1 + 1s to see how they would work in the room I have now.  I believe I was running them on Audio Research M-100s.

Recently purchased these MG12s with Sound Anchor stands from a local seller. The room is a small (12x12) cube so you might not think they would work. I used this diagonal setup to get excellent sound. Vocal images are rock solid, perfectly centered when they should be. Instruments have very specific locations throughout the soundstage.
My only issue is their tendency to highlight the top end. I installed the 1.2 ohm resisters which helped. A larger value resistor, maybe 2 ohm, might get me exactly what I like.

That is precisely my viewpoint - well said. In my opinion, there's a cherry to top it off - offloading the bottom end (via an electronic crossover) benefits the Maggies. Now, plant a pair of mammoth Soundlabs in my listening room and I'll happily ditch the subs.

Thanks for the pictures.  To the man who calls himself Mr. Acoustat from a person who loves Maggies and Acoustats:

1. What are your comparison opinions of the Maggie 20.7 vs Maggie Tympani IVa vs Acoustat 2+2?

2. And since only the 20.7 of these three is in current production, what other current production planars do you feel are better than the 20.7?

3. What is your reference planar that is no longer in production?

Here are the Sound Lab Majesic 945PX panels at the California Audio Show (CAS5) near San Francisco last weekend. Many said they considered the room the best at the show.

He doesn't have shoes on, so the photo is slightly inaccurate with regard to perspective.

The Super-7s...
http://serenityacoustics.com/products/thesuper7.html
...were designed and built by GR Research's Danny Ritchey.  They're fully dipole, hybrid mag-planars (treble and MR) with powered, servo-controlled movingcoil bass systems.  Each uses one BG Neo-3 PDR tweeter and four Neo 10 PDR MR drivers in an MTM arrangement.  (I'm told these are custom versions made for Danny.)

MR/tweeter crossover parts are, IMO, good to very good...

...but I'll soon be replacing the MR-series choke and the treble-series cap and treble-shunt coil with better parts.  Also will run new speakercable unbroken from the spades at the amps' bindingposts all the way to the initial components on the x-over board.

Sensitivity is rated at 97dB and after going thru 2 SET monoamps--Coincident Frankenstein IIs [300B-based 8-Watters] and WAVAC MD-805ms [805-based 55-Watters]--this year I'm now happily using First Watt J2s, 30WPC all-JFET stereo amps.

My system has never sounded better, and I'm thrilled. ... :green: ... :green: ... :green:

FWIW, the 2.35-ratio screen is 8 feet wide (NOT diagonal) and is illuminated by an Epson 8700 UB projector that's driven by an Oppo '95.

Does anyone else's cat do this ??
It can't be very comfortable, 6 feet up there on a space about 1.5" wide.
But he seems to like it. I played a variety of drum test tracks at a healthy volume. He would not budge.

He's in the null area ....... :)
