Yeah, I saw several examples of modern grill cloth when I was at the factory last summer, and it just seemed to me that the black was a good choice.  The tan/gold cloth as they were originally built turned dingy after a while, so the white was right out.  The grey just didn't seem to work for me, even though it looks nice on the panels.
Yeah, the beige does turn dingy (my 1-D's didn't have any gold in them), particularly if you smoke as I did back then. I really like the look of the black ones best, too, but I'm thinking that when I put the new cloth on my IVA's (still being refurbished and modded so bare for the time being) I'll have to go with beige, because I also have a small room and black is kind of overwhelming. Though not all that bad looking, here they are black with the cloth off:

For a few years (till maybe 1978?) Magnepan made numerous cloths available.  Mine were originally ordered with a pattern called "sunflower" which had big patterns scattered across the cloth (somewhat like needlepoint) in a very rich gold color on beige fabric.  About the time the order reached the factory, they cut back significantly on the number of styles available and I had to settle for one called "gold" which was a very understated fabric with gold-colored threads mixed in among the beige.  I kept the cloth, and it still looks attractive, but the beige darkened quite a lot over the years just due to dust, dirt and some water staining from the incident which led to the wire damage - all of which made then unusable going forward.  Comparing them side by side, I feel that the modern fabric is more acoustically transparent - it's certainly thinner and more porous to the sound.  And since it's only me 99% of the time listening, I care little for the appearance.  Black will probably stay new-looking a bit longer.

The open baffle Neo10's blend very well with the open baffle servo subs.

The dspMusikLCD is either an 2x8 channel or 2x16 channel digital crossover that used HiRez ADC's and DAC's for processing at 24bit/192KHz for the system.  I developed the crossover for my speakers with the 16 channel since it is running 14 of 16 channels driving the system.  There are 22 amp channels driving the speakers. That is 10 Parasound Halo A23's and 2 Rythmik Audio HX800 servo amps.  Lots of headroom.

The dspMusikLCD was developed by Danville Signal Processing, Inc for many uses and a very good one is a digital crossover.  The software programming environment was developed by DSP Concepts.  I am a licensed developer for the system, so I develop the applications for the units.  Works with Windows , OSX and Linux over USB2.

Here is one thread where I discuss it:

Thanks, Rich. I'll have to read more about your system, it sounds pretty amazing. Why all the power on the Neo-10's, given that they're so efficient? And why use separate channels of DSP, are you tapering the lines? But I'm sure you discuss this in other threads, don't want to take up your time asking about things you've already discussed.

I'm definitely going to have to do something, since when I fixed the delamination on the midranges the repairs came out white rather than black:

(Actually, I'll be replacing them with the Neo 8's -- not sure how those will look when I've mounted them . . . )

So...you are going to remove the original Magnepan midrange element and replace it with an array of Neo 8 drivers?  I hope you post that build thread when it happens.  I'm sure many members besides myself would follow that with great interest!

Sure, I'd be glad to!

(BTW, I'm not the pioneer here -- Satie did it with his Tympani IV's with great success and I got the idea from him.)

Excellent, thanks, I'll be a while reading that! Most curious about your beam forming but I'll read the thread rather than peppering you with questions.

Beautiful speaker and lady too.  I don't recall seeing a speaker like that before-- but I'm guessing it's magnetic planar with a ribbon.  What is it?  My lady would never allow a speaker that big in the living room... apparently that's not an issue for you, though  :thumb:

I'm intrigued. It looks a lot like an Apogee -- ribbon tweeter, ribbon midrange, base panel with an angled side -- I'm guessing that the part on the left is just cosmetic, to make it look rectangular so the angled edge can do its thing?

It's 2018 and I'm back, with Quad '2905s
I'm back to Quads. In the late 1970s, I had one pair and then stacked pairs of '57s; then a pair of '989s maybe 15 years ago.

Rescued these ESL 2905s...

...in northern CA.  The PS Audio BHK 300s arrived last week.  I'm still using Rythmik F15HP (sealed) SWs (with HP filter at 25Hz) while driving the Quads fullrange.  The system has NEVER sounded so transparent nor has the soundstage sounded so well focused in the center...so well focused that I've removed my centerchannel system.  Amps are still breaking-in as are the six quartets of aftermarket 6DJ8/6922/ECC88 tubes*.  The pre/pro is a very good Marantz AV7704 (new the fall of '17), but a new, higher-end AV8805 is on the way.  I'm using ClearDay Double-Shotgun-Plus speakercable composed of six 24g. solid-silver conductors (= 16-1/4g.) per pole and Neotec NEI-1002 double-solid-UPOCC-silver IC, now with Neotec '6613 XLRs, in this first balanced system I've ever had.

Have added Sound-O-City's spike bars at the rears of the bases...

http://soundocity.com/beta/product/outriggers-with-brass-cones/

...because my floor is not smooth or level; they improve stability and rigidity very nicely.

The pair of PSA Stellar M700s will be leaving soon (not that there's anything wrong with them!)... The pair of inexpensive Emotivas in the center drive the eight (soon to be 10) surround and ceiling speakers.  The system is built primarily for multichannel music but also has a pseudo-4K/3840 Epson '5040 projector and a 96"-wide (not diagonal), Panavision-ratio screen.

Even if I say so myself, it sounds and looks FABULOUS.   :D    :green:    :D    :green:    :D
