Actually modifying the parts inside a UL tested safety device is not a good idea.

Dave,  did you upgrade the SurgeX? A few years ago I bought the Brick Wall.  An alternative the used Elgar conditioner.  John Atwood in Clarisonus likes it very much.  Read also in diyaudio the thread Elgar Line Conditioners.

Hi xsb. Yeah, the Brick Wall has the same surge protection as the SurgeX units. The only upgrade I've done so far is replacing the stock power cord... there's a lot more that can be done. It's on the back burner right now, along with my equipment rack, which I bought the lumber for over a year ago...  :oops:  Been busy playing with cables recently but I will get around to doing a few key mods to the SurgeX pretty soon.

No, I've been spending all my audio time on cables but I do have the receptacles...

I am sorry I started this thread then didn't finish the project, but I will make time for it soon as I think it will make a nice improvement...
