How to have a number one the easy way

This is very interesting.  A bit dated now, but a fascinating read nonetheless.

If you missed it the first time around, the KLF was one of the biggest bands of the late 80's/90's.  They've done crazy stuff over their career. Bowie has called them the greatest artists of our time, not so much because of their music, but because of their antics.   You may remember them BURNING $1 million pounds CASH.  They actually did this.

One of the two, Bill Drummond, wrote a short book called  "The Manual" (how to have a number one the easy way).   Brilliant.

It's hilarious, ballsy and informative.   The techniques are dated now, but there's still some really crazy-valid concepts.

If you have ever aspired to record music, this is a must read:

Seriously read this!  It's a long read, but it's soooo fascinating.  Give yourself 1 hour.  Bill Drummond is a genius.

I had no idea The KLF and The Timelords were the same people.  Many thanks for the link, as that manual brought something very funny into perspective for me.

I remember a guy I knew while doing my undergraduate degree in Australia.  He was president of a local chapter of the "Young Liberals" (the hip, young, politically active conservatives - the Liberal Party is conservative in Australia) who proudly drove his 10 year old BMW at ludicrously high speeds so he could be noticed by more people, and used a shoe horn and vasoline to squeeze into a pair of moleskins so tight they would make John Laws' eyes water.  He also claimed to play the guitar, but never managed to provide any evidence.

There was a time when this guy held forth on the essential hierarchy of music forms, using it to explain his ever-increasing musical enlightenment.  As a guitarist, he had enjoyed a fleeting interest in the blues.  But he had soon realized it to be an inferior music form.  He then graduated to jazz, believing it might provide more intellectual and emotional satisfaction.  However, after several years listening to jazz, he found he had exhausted all the benefits that this limited music form could offer.  That was when he discovered The KLF, a group of musicians who were obviously operating on a much higher intellectual and artistic plane than all others.  When I frowned at the idea, he offered me his sympathies, and suggested that with sone maturity I might see the genius of their creations.

And he was right.  Now I do see the genius of their creations.

Fully agree Chad

I think a lot of people wrote the KLF off because they were 'techno'

Those guys were geniuses.   They've deleted their entire music backlog.   Such a weird thing!

The other day i listened to some of their tracks again.. and... it isn't really standing the test of time too well :)

Their antics, the conceptual art of it all, leaves me enamored and envious.  They must have had so much bloody fun with it all.  That's living

It's hard to find out much about what they've been up to since.
