Here's that Tom Sawyer cover I mentioned:

listen to the whole thing, it's quite an exemplary cover.

Deadsy = unlistenable.   I have no idea how anyone can find that entertaining or listenable in any way but if you say so.  IMO, that is an assault on my senses and ears.  Not in a good way.

This next band, the Cult, is not technically Goth but their early music was dark in a gothic way.  I'm a huge fan of Billy Duffy's tone and amazing riffs.

Reall? Did you listen to both albums  . No way, they were a great band. But you might be a little old for it.

The Cult was great too but their last two albums sucked badly.

Meh... listened to a couple of their tracks, reminds me of Orgy, whose best, IMHO, was a cover of New Order's 'Blue Monday'.

I only listened to a handful of songs on YouTube.  It sounds like noise to me.

Regarding the Cult, I only like two albums but I like them a lot. The Love album is my favorite. It has so many great songs including She Sells Sanctuary, Rain, Love, Fire, etc.  there is no filler on that album. It's a shame they went off track in later years because this stuff holds up very well. After cult is unlistenable..but not as bad as that Deadsy stuff.

Do you really like that music?

like I said, it's totally an acquired taste. It took me a few listens for sure. But yeah, absolutely love it. I buy albums all the time, always new stuff, and I still go back and pop them in. I can understand why you wouldn't like them at first though. I didn't.

On the Cult, I paid extra for the double disc version with swag on their abum Made for This or it whatever it's called because I was listening to  lot of Cult at the time. I felt robbed. Terrible, awful album.

I hate that it's taking up space on my rack... Anyone want it?

The album is Born into This, and it's total crap. Those guys haven't put out a decent album in years but I still listen to the Love album. Another to good songs from that album are Big Neon Glitter, and Hollow Man.  They are also pretty easy to play on guitar.

Deadsy is almost pop and pretty tame by anyone's standards. I can't wait to hear their cover of Summertime Sadness.

As for the rest, I wouldn't mind the whole nordic death metal/goth metal/whatever-you-call-these genres if it weren't for the demon vocals. Forget that. I'll have my own nightmares thank you very much.

Epica? Nice until the growling hell voice dude arrives. Even the hot redhead vocalist sort of smiles knowingly once he starts in. I expected her to wink. "It's all in good fun" she seems to imply and I would agree.

This one had me laughing...

The experts will reply this is X genre and not what's being referred to here but still, I got a good laugh out of it.

I have to add, I would never say any of this is "bad" music. The Very End is doing it right on that song. The video made me laugh not the song.

Other than an s-ton of Cure albums I can't really think of any other Goth I might have.. Type-O. Maybe a few other bands. Not my usual fare.

As others have pointed out, it seems like a lot of stuff named here wouldn't usually be considered Goth Rock. I would agree with the characterization of Joy Division as protogoth, with Bauhaus usually being considered the first Goth band (as always this is probably debatable). I'd also consider The Cure and Sisters of Mercy goth in the traditional sense of the term even though both bands didn't like the label "goth." I also tend to associate "goth" with  the 1980s, particularly the first half of the decade.

And then there are the multiple genres and bands inspired by goth. Much industrial music like Ministry and Nine Inch Nails are certainly indebted. As is Goth Metal and Sludge Metal (Sunn 0))), Sleep and Earth for example). And then there is the general trend of dark and spooky themed music like Salem;s "King Night" or A Place to Bury Strangers that also feels very indebted to goth as well as shoegaze (and IMHO, the combination of goth and shoegaze is a powerful 1-2 sonic punch for sure).

I don't find myself turning to goth very much these days (though I did just find The Sisters Of Mercy "Floodland" on vinyl and have been enjoying that immensely). But I do find myself drawn to a lot of great music that has been clearly influenced by goth music.

And lastly, here's a Wikipedia list of what are traditionally considered Goth bands:

This is probably my favorite Gothic Rock tune:

Also, this is some great Gothic Rock as well:

But let's not forget where true Gothic Rock really started:

Don't make me put on copious amounts of eye-liner and come over there.  :nono:
