The Fixx @ State Theater, Falls Church VA.   Actually wasn't too bad - the band still can play & the lead singer still has a good voice, which is more than you can say for many of these revival gigs.  The main limitation is that even as a decent band they just don't have enough decent material - so perhaps a quarter of the set had good songs.  Oddly enough they closed w/ three encore tracks (when usually one or two is standard).  Maybe they just wanted to keep playing on.  They closed with kinda a melancholic track - don't remember the name.  But they are kinda a "pensive" new wave band.

Sound engineering could have been better - and I don't mean that it's too loud / sybillant as usual - it was that the synth volume / mix was down to low.

I think they were actually trying as they have a new album out last month & the "hit track" (Beautiful Friction) is actually pretty decent. They managed to give off that good 80's new wave glow.......

Just got in from the Dinosaur BBQ in Rochester, NY (here on biz), where local Steve Grills performed. Great blues music! :thumb:
Might not seem like much to you, but there's about only two places to be at night around here (Dinosaur BBQ, starring the fantabulously beautiful bar mgr. Julie, and ex-Jimmy Mac's bar, now known as Caribbean Chateau, owned by the pretty darling Erlande. And the late night walk back to my hotel alone from either place is not pleasant.  :o

Peter Gabriel at the Wells Fargo center in Philadelphia Friday night. I've seen him many many times, and this show was absolutley sublime.

Peter Gabriel at the Wells Fargo center in Philadelphia Friday night. I've seen him many many times, and this show was absolutley sublime.

Jones Beach Show comments -
- Not sure why this was called "Back to Front". No indication of why that title was relevant at all
- The tour should have been called the "Post Industrialization Tour" because that's what the stage looked like, with railroad tracks and multiple swivel lights, each operated by a pair of masked people.
- Nothing "organic" in this set, it was all mechanical
- He playes the first 4 songs with the auditorium lights on full. Then they go out suddenly and the light show kicks in during "Intruder". Too many people shouting for the lights to go out, and subsequently the beauty and impact of those 4 acoustic songs goes out the window. I can't really remember them at all.
- The band is obviously still pulling its act together. Some songs just sounded like they needed more rehersal, Big Time in particular.
- Gabriel is getting older, and he tried to move about, but it was rather placid on the whole. His energy levels aren't what they used to be. In fact, he lays down during one song
- Yeah, all the stage tricks he pulled in the past were missing. I really wanted to see the big bouncy ball. He does pull out one fairly spectacular trick during the encore though.

All in all, it was enjoyable, but not as much so as previous shows I've seen.

A great weekend for me:

Saturday - Ventura Hillside Music Festival - Elvin Bishop, Dr. John and Blues Traveler
Dr John was great, he had John Cleary with him as well as his Lower 911 band

Sunday - Mavis Staples and Bonnie Raitt at the Santa Barbara Bowl - a fantastic show, both Mavis and Bonnie were great and sound was superb.

Saw David Byrne with St Vincent last night. It was friggin great.  We had great seats right next to the soundboard so the sound was perfect. Although it should have been called St Vincent with David Byrne.

Paul, I wish I knew you were in town. I was at the Sunday Riot Fest too! Wow was Iggy a great, and still very intense show. Seeing Elvis Costello and Jesus & Mary Chain were my other highlights.

And wow what a run of music I have seen live recently. Here's the list of highlights from the past 10 days:

Glen Hansard
Iron & Wine
Corin Tucker
Wilco
Jesus & Mary Chain
Elvis Costello
Iggy Pop
David Bryne and St Vincent

And that stretch was followed by a basement punk show last Wednesday by the Hysterics out of the Pacific North West where I bruised a rib.
