Sonics 800x Issue (Bryston 7B)
« on: 21 Mar 2024, 11:31 pm »
I'm hoping you guys can help me with is.

I have 2 Sonics 800x amplifiers (Bryston 7b). When I turn the units on, there is
a nasty pop sound from the speakers, louder than Ive ever heard on anything
else. Power down has an equally nasty crackling sound followed by a suckout
sound.

These pops are registering on the clipping light. Should I be concerned for my speakers? Is everything working correctly?

I can’t believe no one has answered this one for you yet.

Can you describe how you power your components ON? Do you power up the amps first or the preamp? Perhaps there’s a simple solution to your problem.

If it IS the power amp that’s producing the loud noise, that would definitely not be a good thing. In worst cases, this can be a sign of DC offset reaching the speakers – very bad for the tweeters! I assume your amps are of an older generation so perhaps the soft-start circuit that would otherwise prevent this might have lost its effectiveness.

I would highly recommend talking to an expert and most certainly find a similar topic or even post a question on some other forum.

Best of luck!

I had 2 different pairs of these and they do the same thing. I believe it's due to lack of soft start circuitry.
I currently use one set for the woofer section on my model Ts.
My solution is to leave them on 24/7. They run very cool so no worries there.
