An integral part of the '60's and beyond.
His blues chops were the real deal.

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

I saw that earlier and hoped that it wasn't true.
The world's best Firebird player is gone.
He was just great.

He is "Still Alive and Well" in my mind and my heart.  Thank you Johnny for the great memories.  One the first albums I ever purchased was Johnny Winter - Live And.   Vicious slide guitar with a blues heart like no other.  Go in peace.

Johnny was something else like no other. Another guitar hero, Alvin Lee died a year ago last March at 68 years of age. The weekend following his death Lee was scheduled to do a gig with Johnny in Paris. R.I.P.

Alvin and Johnny were two of my favorite guitarists - that would have been a good show.
Here's a real interesting article about what happened to Johnny:

An amazing read thanks. Makes you want to cry, makes you want to be happy. Sure glad he made it back for the finale.

Glad I got to hear him live a few years back, but still a serious bummer. Seems every year we have one less blues legend. Gonna queue up a JW album now in his memory.

Saw him live at Merriweather Post Pavilion on a bill with B.B. King and the Nighthawks. I remember it was just days after SRV died because I actually heard about that at the show. So that would have been late August-early Sept 1990. He was great.

A true legend.  If there was a better blues player than Johnny, I haven't heard him. Winter was a true original and a monster on guitar. RIP.

I was just listening to the Sunday morning "G-Strings" radio show on WPFW-FM (WDC). It's a three hour show featuring music of stringed instruments, mostly (but not entirely) guitar, mostly (but not entirely) jazz. Two and a half hours in, I called the DJ, Tom Cole, to ask why he hadn't played a single Winter track or even mentioned him. He responded that he "wasn't a very big Johnny Winter fan". Fine, to each his own, but he's a pretty prominent player to simply ignore. He could have gritted his teeth through one track or gone and took a dump or something. Glad I called him to protest.

I saw him & his brother many times back in the 70's.  I remember once in this shithole called the Rockpile (a warehouse painted black that booked great bands but was a real dump!).  It's early morning by now, Edgar Winters White Trash, we're baked and screaming for a 3rd encore, and out comes the silver wraith followed by another one in a top hat!  They basically did another set, it was amazing!  Another time was at the Fillmore East.  It was Elvin Bishop 3rd billing, JW 2nd, & The Allman Bros. top billing (this was the series of nights that spawned their legendary live album!).  At the end of the 2nd set Elvin and Johnny joined Duane for a jam!  Such excellent memories.  Thanks Johnny!
