sylvania vt-231 vs Raytheon VT 231 in Rogue 99
« on: 29 May 2015, 12:19 am »
I'm looking at getting another pair of 6sn7 for my Rogue 99 super Mag pre amp in the amplifying position.  Considering Raytheon 6sn7 GT VT-231 vs Sylvania  6sn7 GT VT-231 (similar or even identical  to bad boys I believe).  There are others I would look at but they are beyond my price point.

Anyone compared these?

my system is Squeezebox Touch, NAD CD-  99 pre amp- Rogue Stereo 100 amp- Salk Song towers + Rythmik sub. Sounds  very dynamic, airy, not too colored..  Would be nice to have a slightly lush or  warmer pair of 6sn7's for rolling. Also must be very quiet as the 99 is sensitive to noise- although I can always return if they are not.

Currently I have 2 short RCA's combined with 2 Sylvania tall 6sn7 GTA's.   Is there discernable difference between Sylvania GTA's and the VT- 231's?  (the GTA's are sweet and very low noise)

many thanks

Tom

I love Sylvania vt-231 ('40-'50), for my amp (SET300B) did better than Raytheon .

Another option is RCA5692 Redbase if you  prefer smooth sound, nice for jazz vocal

If you want something that is a bit "lush" sounding try the Psvane CV-181 TII (I'm using a set in my MW LS 100 preamp) or the Shuguang CV181-Z select from Grant Fidelity. See message below from GF.

"The CV181-Tii are special selected for very low noise for high end preamp and phonostages. CV181-Z wasn't screened to that extent.

If you are considering these tubes for tube amp driver stage before power output tubes, CV181-Z at $199 is perfectly fine. "

Thanks for the suggestion. I am using Psvane 12au7 Treasure 's in my power amp. I think they,re great. However the Psvane CV-181 I believe is too tall to fit under the hood of the Rogue 99.
Cheers

I have always found the sylvania vt231s to be bass light.  I much prefer the brown base WGTAs.

Great...I just got a pair over a week ago, but have not tried them yet.  :?

Well, I am very happy to report that after installing the Sylvania VT231's, I do not find the bass to be "light"!
