Focal T90K replacement
« on: 28 Jan 2013, 04:29 am »
I have a VMPS 626 SE with a failed Focal T90K.  Does anyone know of a good replacement for it?  Will I need to rework the crossover?  Thanks

Try Zalytron, or E-Speakers.  Both companies sell Focal and JM Labs products.  Zalytron
used to be the Focal US importer too.

But, the Kevlar version of that tweeter is hard to find.  And not many choices in finding
replacements, since Focal no longer sells raw drivers to the DIY builder.

Also, E-Speakers sells an EMIT-R type tweeter too.  Maybe try that, if all else fails...

Good Luck!

Focal makes a titanium inverted dome tweeter called the TC 90 TD5 B.  There are also a number of TC90K tweeters for sale on the used/NOS market.  I'd look for a spec sheet for the T90K and, if you can find one, post it here.  Then compare it to the tweeters shown above.  So long as the sensitivity and impedance are the same, and the frequency range and response is similar, it's unlikely that you would need to rework the crossover.

Thanks for the quick responses.  I will see if I can find the specs and determine if I can find something close.

The following is what I have found so far.

FOCAL T90K
Impedenza Nominale: 8 ohms
Dimensioni: 92x92 mm
Diametro bob.mob.: 20.4
Sensibilita' 1w/1m: 91 dB
Potenza continua/programma: 10w/75w
Fs: 810 hz
Re: 6 ohms

FOCAL TC90TD5B
Impedenza Nominale: 6 ohms
Dimensioni: 60.90x53.90 mm
Diametro bob.mob.: 20 mm
Sensibilita' 1w/1m: 91.5 dB
Potenza continua/programma: 12w/75w
Fs: 1471 Hz
Re: 5.5 ohms

HT 264
26 mm tweeter with fabric cone. Voice coil windings immersed in magnetic fluid increase short term power handling capacity.
    power handling (continuous/programme) = 100/250 W
resonance frequency fs = 810 Hz
    impedance R = 8 Ohm
    sound pressure level SPL = 92 dB (2,83V; 1m)
DC resistance Re = 6 Ohm
    force factor BL = 2,74 N/A
    voice coil inductance L = 0,047 mH
effective piston radiating area Sd = 36,5625 cm2
effective mechanical mass incl. air load 0,4 g
equivalent volume of compliance Vas = 0,007 l
    total Q factor Qts = 0,61 (Qms=1, Qes=1,54)
voice coil diameter = 26 mm
    mounting diameter d = 75 mm
    overall diameter d = 100 mm
mounting depth (not countersunk) t = 50 mm
    mass m = 0,66 kg

Looks like the FOCAL TC90TD5B wont work but the HT 264 might.  Don't know anything about the HT 264, but that doesn't mean much, don't know much about any of this.  Do either of these look acceptable?  Thanks

I wouldn't discount the 90TD5B.  Spec wise, it's pretty close to your 90K.  The sensitivities and impedance's are definitely close enough.  The higher Fs: 1471 Hz resonance frequency shouldn't be an issue, as Brian generally used a higher crossover point for his tweeters.  So, as long as your 626's had a high pass point higher than 3.5K, I'd think you'd be safe as-is.

Also, how many 90K's do you need?  There's a single 90K diaphragm on eBay now (not mine).  I'd get it if I were you.

FOCAL TC90TD5B
Impedenza Nominale: 6 ohms
Dimension: 60.90x53.90 mm
Diametro bob.mob.: 20 mm
Sensibilita' 1w/1m: 91.5 dB
Potenza continua/programma: 12w/75w
Fs: 1471 Hz

Stimpy,

Thanks. I've read other post stating the newer Focal driver would not work without crossover modification.
I was unaware that the diaphragm could be replaced. I guess I will get the screwdriver out and see how the t90k comes apart.

I have the same problem

What was your solution?

Anyone have suggestions for either replacing or repairing a Focal t90k
