I have not heard (m)any high efficiency speaker systems. But my favourite is the system currently built for me by Ben Arends of Sound with Style: a bespoke 10+ cubic foot MLTL, designed by Scott Lindgren for the GPA 604-8H-III, running custom Rick Craig crossovers. It should be a lovely speaker, but perhaps more importantly it has been a very rewarding experience. Each of the people working on this project are very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with.

Progress picture:

Ben is doing a really nice job of bringing out the beauty of the Red Heart Eucalypt. There is (at least) one more coat to be applied, then cutting and buffing. In his words, the finish will be "like glass". The rest of the speaker will be finished in 'piano' black.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

Cheers,
Raymond

Hey Raymond,

How about some details on that speaker?

Looks like a monster from the spec sheet (121 dB/w/m at 8 ohms, 100 watt max input, F3=40 Hz if I'm reading it right).

I had 8 inch woofers in 6 cu. ft. MLTL's that were rated 114 dB at 17 Hz and they sounded space constrained until I tried them in a 20,000 cu. ft. chapel.

Hi JLM,

Yes, the datasheet does make it seem like these are 121 dB/w/m at 8 ohms. My guess is that this is for the compression driver and that the mid-bass is significantly less efficient. At the bottom of the datasheet is a frequency plot (using the GPA crossover) that suggests in-cabinet efficiency ~99 dB/w/m at 8 ohms from 50Hz upwards; a ‘better’ cabinet and room-gain will extend bass evenly below that. Great Plains Audio seems to provide realistic specifications, so I am inclined to trust the plot.

They are beasts of drivers and very well suited to being driven by SET amps – this was one of my criteria for selecting them. That said, I would probably not have chosen them if not for the Rick Craig crossovers being available and knowing I could have a decent cabinet designed them.

After I have had some time with them I will share my impressions etc. in a thread here. I’d also like to present the project in some way, without giving away Scott’s or Rick’s designs – something that could help people decide whether such a system would be appropriate for them, what types of issues need to be considered and point them in the direction of knowledgeable people that can help them along the way. I have some ideas for a simple web site, but my time is limited.

Cheers,
Raymond.

Klipsch Cornwalls. I have Khorns and Heresy as well, but the Cornwalls sound good on everything and are easy to please regarding the components you use in front of them.
Of course the Khorns sound awesome, but you have to have corners and good equipment to use with them.

Someone can identify this OB woofer??
Initially I thought it was the Fostex FW 31 inches woofer but this is much bigger:
The small FR on the floor is a Feastrex.

Awesome.  How do you describe their sonic signature?
What made you chose those drivers rather than other ones?

I realized I had never updated my posting with the full Hawthorne Audio Reference K2s. The main speakers have a waveguide AMT tweeter and 15" mid-woofers.  The secondary towers have 15" Augie woofers x2 each.  Yep, that is 8 x 15" mid and woofers plus two 100db AMTs (crossed over about 1,000hz). All driven by a 2A3 Bottlehead amp and two Rythmik 370 watt OB plate amps (for the two Augie towers).  Here is a full room photo:

Best,
John
