Welp, a bunch of recommendations for subs between $3k and $6k  :o, and then one for $350.

What am I missing? Did they listen to, and not like, subs from brands like Epik, Emotiva, Audioengine, Tannoy, Rel, etc.? Where are the $700 subs, even the $1,200 subs? Am I the only around here who's not loaded ?

I also thought it a bit strange to have such a wide divide.

They only recommend things that they have reviewed in the magazine for that year.

Exactly, and there might be a bit of bias....

I love the fact that their B grade 'subwoofer' isn't a subwoofer at all; it's a crossover.

I see one of the reviews(heading) says DD18+,well the review is on the DD18.
Glad I stopped reading those mags or online reviews.
I wonder who pays those guys, advertisers I suppose.
Don't matter me as I do home auditions  anyway.

Well since we know from Geddes and Welti that multiple subs are needed for
proper bass response in small rooms what is the value of reviewing individual subs
which cannot provide the best bass response?

Yeah I agree. Reading the mag reviews is kinda like reading the comics, just really funny but not to be taken seriously.

Stereophile has always been about the cost, if it costs a lot it has to be better. And if they haven't reviewed it, it must not exist....my opinion of course  .. And the mag makes for good reading while taking that morning constitutional in the head after a cup or two of coffee.

It's kinda porn in a way. People want to look at hot models, not at the reasonable, average, ones that are actually accessible to them in real life. So as a 'buyer's guide', it doesn't really work. Which is fine, just don't present it as something it isn't. I mean, does Road and Track do a 'Top 10 Recommended Sedans' feature, and then recommend BMW M5, Aston Martin Rapide, Porsche Panamera, Mercedes 550 AMG, Audi S7... oh, and Toyota Yaris? F'in' silly, man.
