Title: Anyone know where to download any free 192/24 music samples?
Post by: Wayner on 4 Nov 2009, 08:05 pm
Hi,

Interested in the format, but not much luck looking for just a taste of this HiRes format without spending $45 on a disc. Anyone know or have a free downloadable sample?

Here's a link for free 24/176.4 HRX stuff:
http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/Complimentary-241764-HRx-Downloads-Courtesy-Reference-Recordings

Here's one with Kent Poon's 24/192 samples:

Also, here.  After clicking the link to the 2L website, go to the pulldown on the upper right and go to the "Test bench HD audio files".  There will be a bunch of them at various sample rates, including 24/192.  Follow the steps (name and password):

There's a list on the Bryston thread for places to get hi-rez, some are free

I found these interesting
http://www.2l.no/hires/index.html (http://www.2l.no/hires/index.html)   several format and bit-rate choices
http://theslip.nin.com/ (http://theslip.nin.com/)  Interesting as you can get the vinyl and disc for a comparison

Here are two new 24/176.4 files to download FOR FREE!  They are from the well-reviewed vaunted HRX label of Keith Johnson fame.  They are native 24/176.4, not upsampled.

Thanks to Chris Connaker from Computer Audiophile (CA) for providing these.  And should you be short on conversion tools, it offers them in either AIFF, FLAC or WAV versions.  Nice!

Here's a place to get a 24/192 sample as well as the same thing (from the same mastering session) at 24/96 and 16/44:

ted,
I heard a piece done by the Boston Symphony Chamber Orchestra, and started checking on how to buy it.  This led me to their home site.  I didn't like that they were selling the digital stream only in  WMA format.  I went ahead and bought the sacd, used off of Amazon, but started to wonder, which hi-rez service offers the best bang for the buck?  And with other formats besides WMA.  I'm not talking about Apple or PC.  PC here.  I'm talking about FLAC, Ogg-Vorbis, and so on.  Boston offers a yearly fee, and I was tempted, as it would have only cost a little more than this CD, but I was afraid it would not have included the selection I wanted.

Lyndon,
This is the wrong thread.  Please post this good post on the "Sites To Download HiRez Music" thread
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=67909.0

BTW, the $30 one month subscription gives you a dozen 24/88 albums to download (one days work).  Nice deal!

This thread is about free samples, which I don't see over on BSO.

Will repost, I guess.
Let me know if there is another thread on the pros and cons of WMA vs. ???
Thanks, Ted

Nine Inch Nails new album The Slip is available for free in 24/96 from the official NIN website. I downloaded it as my first Hi Rez album.

Thanks but his thread is for 24/192 downloads.  The Slip download has been around since last year and is documented here, on the correct "free 24/96 downloads" thread.

A new Linn 24/192 sampler that is free.  Thanks to Marius on the Bryston Circle for this heads up.  :thumb:

Make sure you pick the 24/192 (or less if your DAC can't handle)

Anyone know about the quality of Linn's sacd transfers to 192? (I'm assuming they're not going back to some original pcm files/tapes).

Scott, thanks, but we brought this up before.  Seldom have I found 24/192k tracks there.  The majority of 24 bit stuff is 24/48k....hence not relevant for this particular thread (although not to be scoffed at generally).

Hiya Ted,

I didn't see the earlier reference. Must have been that deleted post? If so, would you like me to delete my previous post or would you rather prune them to the IGWB?

Neither.  The link is cool, just not likely too chock full of 192k.  No big deal.  We're here to love anything 24 bit, as long as it's good.  :)

You need to be a member (i.e sign up for Cookie's newsletter).  Chris, did you just get that email today?  I dl'd those a few weeks ago; need to go see if these are 13 more.  :)  Nope, same...that was just a summary email from Cookie, I guess.

Thanks regardless; I was off my game and didn't post this; glad you did.

Linn is offering a free song by download each day of December through Christmas. Here's what the email notice I received states:

"Get in the festive spirit with a free Studio Master download every day until Christmas. With 24 days of magical recordings by a host of great musicians, you can relax from the bustle of Christmas and enjoy a musical gift from Linn...

There’s something for everyone to enjoy - from the lively lilts of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and a captivating concerto from the Avison Ensemble, to foot-stomping indie-rock band Admiral Fallow and the absorbing rhythms of Emma Pollock (The Delgados). Each track is available in Studio Master - the highest quality download available anywhere, letting you hear a song exactly as it was recorded. Every note, every beat captured just as it sounded before it was shrunk to fit on CD or squashed down to MP3 size.

Don’t forget to check back each day - by Christmas you’ll have an unbelievable playlist, with love from Linn."

At the time of this post there are two songs available, the first in 24/88.2 and the second in 24/96 maximum resolutions. When you select the downloads in your preferred format to "purchase", it then goes through the normal sale process but since they are free you are not prompted for any credit card information.

Here's the URL to access the downloads: http://christmas.linn.co.uk/

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

-Bill

Which format is best for your DAC?
Every DAC has it's own character, some sounds better using PCM files and some sounds better using DSD files...... Some people find the convenience of FLAC files more important.
Here on this page is a list containing 2 minutes of a song in 11 different formats.

The song is called 'A Fool For You' and is performed by Carmen Gomes Inc.
It’s taken from the album 'Carmen Sings The Blues'.

http://soundliaison.com/studio-showcase-series/276-carmen-gomes-sings-the-blues (http://soundliaison.com/studio-showcase-series/276-carmen-gomes-sings-the-blues)

All the different formats have the same source file, DXD 352kHz (Studio Master).
We used the AUL ConverteR 48x44 for the conversion to DSD and Wavelab for the conversion to the other PCM formats and FLAC.

When you compare different sample rates always start with the lowest resolution.
During listening don't focus too much, hearing is as individual as taste but hearing is also something which can be acquired, like the taste of good wine.
