OK, it's been a while since we had one...

Buddy Rich was the best drummer ever, but he's dead.

So who is your choice for best living drummer?  My choice is Kenny Aranoff.

Best dead guitarist IMO was Stevie Ray Vaughan...yea yea, I know Jimmie blazed the way for a lot of them, but SRV would blow him away.

What is your favorite guitarist that's dead or alive?

Is their a favorite bass player????

PS, Very cool on the "now playing"

Hmm.. Lots of good ones. Of guitarists I've actually seen, I enjoyed seeing Junior Brown perform the most. I'm certain he's not the best but the man puts on an amazing show.

Your post should spark plenty of interest.

Too many to just pick one. Kenny wouldn't make the list..although he is a solid player.

Methinks Marbles had a wee bit too much to drink today, eh?

Nobody could blow Jimmy away.  Another Stevie, Mr. Stevie Vai, would give Jimmy a run for his money but Jimmy would take it all in stride.  It would make for some interesting head cuttin' and one hell of a pay-per-view.

Since you mentioned Vai....might as well mention his old teacher...Joe Satriani  :guitar:

Okay, I'll bite on this thread just for fun. . .

I think the greatest living drummer thing has been debated way too much, and I don't know if I want to go there with my limited drumming knowledge.  If I HAVE to pick, then Neil Peart I suppose.

Greatest guitarist for me would have to be a tie between Tony Rice and Eric Clapton.

Best on bass for me, Edgar Meyer.

I am not sure I agree about the SRV vs. Jimmy thing.  Sort of a moot point, but it would be interesting to see.

Hmm, best living drummer: Terry Bozzio.

Best guitarist?  Well, depends on what you're looking for.  Fastest I've ever seen would be Yngvie Malmsteen, but he's not my favorite.  Best all time guitarist would have to be Jimi.  Best living guitarist would have to be: Jimi.  He never died, man.  Not to me.

Well, my parrot has excellent taste in both guitarists and drum players, and his current favourites are Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepard (?),  he really likes to "rock out" to the song "Lie to Me".  As for drummers, he pretty much thinks all the good ones are dead - RIP Keith Moon, Ginger Baker.

Your parrot has pretty good taste, in fact, Kenny Wayne is playing with Stevie Ray's old band Double Trouble!

That I can agree with...as he has gone places no other drummer has.

I can't say I have heard Vai's new recordings...but of old..I still prefered a lot of Satch's music. Plus, Satch has consistently had better drummers play for him...but then that's a whole other topic. But yes..you are probably right about skill on the guitar.

The flaw with Vai is the lack of emotion in his playing. That lack is very apparent after listening to Stevie Ray or Frank Marino. Lots of show, but how about soul? As far as drummers, its Jack DeJohnette for me.

Fred,

I understand what you're saying and know where you're coming from, but to say that Vai lacks emotion in his playing is just wrong.   :nono:

Vai's techno-wizardry is not everyone's cup of tea, but one only has to listen to some of his songs like Call it Sleep, Blue Powder, Sisters, etc to realize the emotion he can exude through the guitar.  His expression is simply on a different level.  Not better or worse, just different....much different.

I was fortunate enough to see him play live once when he was with Whitesnake, and I assure you that his performance brought some emotions to a new level.  Granted most of it was directed towards the scantily clad ladies in the audience, but it was there nonetheless.

Regarding his lack of soul, that's another matter.  Vai's role in the movie Crossroads might not have been that far from the truth.

I don't know if you can really say who's best but I'll bite:

Best Living Drummer:  Billy Martin of Medeski, Martin and Wood.  I swear this guy has an atomic clock in his brain.

Best Guitarist:  I could list about 25 but I'd say Al DiMeola.

At the moment I don't wanna touch "Best Guitarist" either, but my vote for best bassist I've ever heard is Stu Hamm.  Steve Harris is also a favorite of mine.  I'd say best drummer would be Neil Peart, followed by Ken Mary, but that's just off the top of my head.  Some guys bash Lars as technically sloppy, but I think he's pretty awesome.

I have to slip in a vote for most overrated drummer;  Tommy Lee.
