Download speed...
« on: 20 Jul 2016, 07:19 am »

I am using the program shown below to see how fast is the VNN-Viettel server on planet (Turtle) Vietnam.
I new it was slow as a turtle, but to me this is completely ridiculous.
I got Ping 44ms (Whatever that means)
Download speed: 2Mbps
Upload speed : 0.26Mbps
(That's today numbers, I've see better figures, but not by much. (4.5Mbps)
Now wonder it's frustrating surfing on the Net here.  :duh:

Wow, that is slow.

I got 84 Mbps download and 8.12Mbps upload on my laptop.

On the iphone I got 38.1 Mbps download and, surprisingly, 11.68 Mbps upload.

Ping 7 ms, download 94.7 Mbps, upload 98.5 Mbps.
Usually it's faster, but we have IPTV and it's on some HD channel now.

Holy crustaceans, are you kidding me?!!!??!

Man, no wonder some people think Australia is a 3rd world country. I'm only just slightly faster than Guy13.

At least the scenery is nice :)  :thumb:

I have to balance speed with what I pay out every month.
I get a solid 15 Mbps down and a pitiful 0.9 Mbps up with DSL but my total telephone plus internet cost is $80 per month (the Tracfone adds $8 per month).

For what I do, 15 Mbps is fast enough, if I have to wait for a download or a page to load it usually at the server end.

I just have basic high speed.  Just tested it and was getting just over 17.5 download and just over 1.5 upload and it usually measures around that give or take (it is the 15/1 plan from the provider).  The provider's website now only shows a plan for up to 25 download and up to 3 upload and it is $3 more per month than my current plan so I'd imagine they will be converting to that soon.  I just was at someone's house who has the 25/3 plan and he should me some 4k Netflix and probably whenever they cut me over I'll do that.

Hi all,
I am at our showroom and I just did a speed test.
Here the server is Viettel (Belong to the Vietnamese army)
at my house it's VNN (Government owned).
What's the difference between government owned and army which is the government ????
Now, Viettel army owned server is 20Mbs download and upload.
The speed at my house with VNN is 3.0Mbs
that's a big difference.
I told my wife that as soon as our contract is over with VNN we will switch to Viettel.

I forgot to mention in both cases (Home and showroom)
it's ADSL connection.
In front of my house they have a box ready to supply fiber optic Internet connection,
when we are ready to switch,
we will ask them how much ?$ ? $ ? $
As per my experience with many things on planet Vietnam,
at first it might be good, but with time, it will degrade,
that's what happened with cable TV.

If you feel that your speed is much less than you pay for, you may get a speed increase by optimizing how you connect. A common bottle neck is wifi - being too far away from the router, having a few walls between, or using old WiFi routers (and receivers at the computer end) can SIGNIFICANTLY reduce the speed. Try connect an ethernet cable from the computer directly to the modem (by pass the router if possible) and test the speed to get a baseline. Bad ethernet cables can also reduce the speed (kinks, sharp bends, etc.). May not do anything but worth a try.

Odal3 thanks for your comments-advices.
Let me share with you what I got in my set up.
ADSL from the wall's telephone line.
The router is Thompson Speedtouch 510
The wifi is Linksys Wireless G WRT54G Version 6
The set up on the picture is 27' in direct line with my laptop.
I added that little alumuminum paper reflector made by yours truly
and it did increase the signal by one notch-bar.
I am wondering if it's worth the trouble and money to use an Ethernet (CAT-6) cable
I would have to hang from the walls and I have already enough electrical spider webs in the house.
Thanks for your suggestions, but I think we will waiti for our provider's contract to expire
and try another provider or optic fiber if reasonnably priced.

Hi Anonamemouse.
We are the one that should be embarrassed with our Internet turtle speed connection.
By the way... Are serious ?
That's faster than a speeding bullet or almost as fast as lightning !

Where are you located and who's your server ?
Can they provide service on planet Vietnam?

Unless I am wrong,
maybe that's why you don't post much pictures.
At that speed it will take forever to download anything.
