HQPlayer NAA for BDP?
« on: 26 Mar 2017, 12:49 am »
I'm reading rumors on the Roon Forum that an HQPlayer NAA option may be integrated into the BDP.

Any truth to that?

Would be super cool...  8)

How about it James?  This would be a great firmware upgrade for the BDP series.  HQPlayer NAA
brings Roon to another level.

Hi Vonnie

I do not think that is in the works.

@jamestanner

Excuse my ignorance, but why would this be necessary?

Because HQPlayer makes Roon sing.

Roon DSP is OK.  HQPlayer brings it to another level.

Hi Vonnie

This is interesting - what does HQ do to the native file and how would you compare it to MPD?

HQPlayer can perform some very complex and computationally expensive audio processing. A desktop computer will have a lot more computational power and memory resources for this than an embedded device. The resulting data can then be output to a DAC connected directly to the digital output of the computer, or to an NAA (Network Audio Adapter) endpoint which itself may be a DAC or could output the data over digital to a separate DAC.

I don't think there are a lot of NAA endpoint audio devices out there, but I'm not super familiar with the topic either. I think the majority of people have their DAC connected directly to their HQPlayer server.

It upsamples and uses a variety of filters to enhance the sound.  How it does that is a conversation beyond my technical knowledge..  NAA allow the computing power to be managed mostly by an attached (on the network) computer rig.

MPD is really good (better than Roon RAAT IMO).  Signalyst HQ Player is better yet, but requires some computing horsepower.  An HQPlayer article link is shown below.

I use NAA via a Sonore microrendu (which is then connected to the DAC).  There are a few NAA players out there, both desktop, and embedded.
