While I understand that all is room dependent are the 8th nerve triangle products designed to be used in tandem with the other products.  In other words, is there any benefit to using just triangls?  I suspect, I am like others whose

The adapts can be painted, and can look really sharp if matched well to the walls or trim.  I would try to find some pictures of painted adapts and try to sway the significant other's opinions.

I used only four triangles by themselves for a while to an extremely great effect.  When I moved to a different location, the effects were unfortunately less pronounced.  Like you said, very room dependent, but great effects are definitely possible with just triangles.  My new location has crown molding which won't allow the triangles to be properly mounted, and I'm sure this plays a big factor.  Also, the new space is much more open and complex than the previous space.
