KWA 150 mono v. KWA 150SE with Aerial Model 9
« on: 9 Oct 2015, 02:24 am »
Hey. As a replacement to Classe CAM 350s driving my Aerial 9s, I am about to buy either 2 150s to run mono or 1 150se (can't afford 2). I am very familiar with both amps, but have never heard a side by side of 1 SE v, regular 150 in mono. Can anyone discuss the difference between the 2?

Also, for anyone who knows Aerial, i am somewhat concerned that 150w may not be enough to really make the 9s sing. Anyone have any insights there?

Thanks in advance.

Can you vertically bi-amp with two KWA-100SE's?  The Model 9 is 90 db so unless your room is huge you might benefit from the bi-amping.

I run black monoblock KWA-150s into my Aerial Model 20T v2s.  They provide plenty of oomph/power.

I reread your post and now realize I didn't answer your question.  You already know that monoblocks would be enough; you are worried that one SE version isn't.  Sorry, can't help you there.  Michael (Kelly, Aerial founder) is always telling me that more power is good.  :)

I think that with any speaker.  Look at how much clean power I use for what I use.   :o

Agreed!  You can never have too much (insert favorite thing)!  Power is clearly one of them.  :)

I use to own the 9's and have had my 20t's then upgraded to 20t's series 2 for a long time.  More power is always better.  The bigger the room the more it will come into play.  So depending on how loud you listen and your room size.  This will make the difference.

So, I went with the SE. I figure I should get the improved version and if I need more power, I can get another when I have the cash.

After one weekend of listening, I think I made the right decision. Despite far less power than my Classe monos, the single MW is a huge improvement. As in sounds like an entirely new and superior system. Far more detail, resolution, and presence. Hard to imagine needing more power. Very happy with the amp.

My room is 16' by 24'. Medium size I guess? Perhaps I would need more power if the room was bigger.

BTW, for you with the 20ts, I assume my room is a bit small for them? I have heard and loved them, but have always assumed the bass would take over my room. Your thoughts?
