I know this is pretty basic, I'm looking at a vintage Marantz CD63 cd player, the unit has a 230 volt  - 50hz power supply. Can I operate it here in the United States?  What about a step up / down transformer?

Now that's what I call vintage!

a] Some components have internal jumpers for 120/240V operation.
b] Many US homes have 240V appliance circuits.
c] Yes a step-up transformer going from 120V to 230/240V will work just fine. A 50Hz power supply works OK on 60Hz (but not the opposite).

Interesting there SS, I have used 60Hz CD players in a 50Hz situation ( Esoteric P10/etc) and found it performed to spec--with the step down Mains Transformer of course.

I was of the understanding that Cycle frequency was not an issue with CD drives--unlike TT's--as the CDs spin at 7200RPM ad hoc.

Happy to have this point  cleared up

Thank you and grateful

Hi rocker9999,
I have a Rega Apollo that was 230V. 50Hz when purchased from the Hong Kong authorized dealer
and with internal re-wiring (Not jumpers) I've converted it to 120V. 50Hz
I have Decware SE84C+ that was bought from the USA and it's 120V.
so I have a transformer from 230V. to 120V. but it operate on 50Hz without any problem.
I also have a Bottlehead Crack that is 120V. and with the same step down transformer
make everything works well even if it's 50Hz.
I am sure your Marantz CD63 cd player will work fine with a step down transformer.
If only the CD player is powered by the transformer I think 500 watts rating should be enough.
Try this link:

I hope this help.

By the way, if I have everything here on planet Vietnam on 120V.
that's because one day I will go back to my home country Canada.

Marantz does not use universal transformers. You'll need a stepup transformer for the player to operate.
